ANALYSIS
A former NCAA Division I wrestler, Zach Makovsky is a promising mixed martial artist competing in the bantamweight division. An intelligent athlete, Makovsky shows good patience and composure in his all-around game, and does very well not to try and rush things or force the issue at any point in the fight. He's proven to be a versatile fighter who can adjust his style for the given bout, and early in his career he's shown excellent cardio, conditioning and the willingness to try and expand on his skills and become as well rounded a fighter as possible.

Entering the sport with a solid wrestling base, Makovsky has worked diligently on rounding out his ground skills and now boasts a solid overall grappling game. He was a former standout wrestler at Drexel University (an NCAA Division I school), where he'd graduate 18th on the all time Drexel career wins list. After college Makovsky would continue developing his wrestling and grappling abilities, eventually going on to capture a Gold Medal at the 2009 FILA Grappling World Championships (no-gi), as well as Gold (gi) and Bronze Medals (no-gi) at the 2010 FILA Grappling World Championships. Makovsky's wrestling base does show in his fights, as he's capable of securing the takedown with nice trips and leg sweeps from in close, as well as a particularly quick and effective single leg. A methodical, positional grappler, Makovsky shows a tight, technical skill set on the ground. He's very quick on the mat, shows very nice guard passing and top game abilities, and is good in scrambles. Makovsky does use his striking well on the ground, proving capable of throwing quick punches and working his ground and pound abilities from the top. Although he prefers fighting from top position, Makovsky shows good defensive guard skills while remaining both comfortable and active operating off his back. He shows competent submission skills and nice sweeps, and overall his wrestling/BJJ combinations mesh well on the ground.

Although he comes from a grappling background, Makovsky has also shown solid skills and promising potential on his feet. A composed, technical striker, Makovsky shows good footwork proving very light and quick on his feet, and possesses nice hands and good hand speed. He's armed with a quick straight left, a good right hook and throws a nice superman punch he effectively incorporates into his standup. Makovsky also shows a nice arsenal of kicks with the ability to deliver quick body kicks and nice high kicks. He puts together solid combination incorporating both his punches and kicks, displays sound defensive abilities, and does very well to keep composed and keep from getting wild on his feet. Makovsky maintains a good flow and rhythm to his standup, and if one wasn't told about his grappling background they might be surprised to learn he comes from a wrestling base.
OUTLOOK
