ANALYSIS
The first and only EliteXC Bantamweight Champion in the company's history, Wilson Reis is a promising fighter currently competing in the featherweight division. A BJJ black belt under world renowned instructor Roberto Godoi, Reis a very accomplished jiu jitsu practitioner and multiple-time veteran of the BJJ Mundials. Among his achievements at the World Jiu Jitsu Championships, Reis was a third place finisher in 2001 (blue belt), third place finisher in 2002 (purple belt), third place finisher in 2003 (purple belt) and tournament champion in 2004 (brown belt). He also competed in the first two Featherweight Grand Prix's that Bellator FC put on, although he did come up short in the semi-finals of both tournaments.
Reis has shown progress in his standup where he's equipped with nice leg kicks, a good straight left and a nice counter left hand. Although Reis isn't a real danger to finish with his striking, it is a nice compliment to his very proficient ground skills and he does uses his standup to set up his takedown attempts. Technically, Reis' striking does require work both offensively and defensively. He's a little stiff and robotic on his feet, where he was outclassed by the more fluid, diverse, and technically adept Patricio Freire in their 2010 Bellator FC Grand Prix semi-final matchup. Reis is still used to throwing one or two punches at a time, and will get sucked into throwing haymakers and partaking in wild exchanges. When pressured, he instinctively looks to shoot in leaving himself open to knees and he will need to continue working on his countering abilities. Although Reis is very comfortable and technically proficient on the mat, he has incurred losses against fighters he wasn't able to control on the ground and it is evident he will need to work on his striking if he wishes to crack the upper echelons of the division. A good athlete with a solid chin and a willingness to trade on his feet, Reis is capable of developing into a competitive striker given more time to develop his skills.
An accomplished grappler, Reis possesses excellent ground skills and comes equipped with strong submission game. Strong and compact, Reis is a "power" BJJ player who combines his strong technical mat skills with brute force and quickness. Although not a wrestler by trade, Reis has continued to work on his takedowns and will does push hard at trying to take the fight to the ground. He's a good athlete who's very quick, and he's shown a nice shot and strong takedowns, including an impressive single leg. A high level BJJ black belt, Reis has an excellent passing game from the top, proving capable of powering through his opponents guard with strong technique, raw power and speed. Very strong from the top, Reis controls his opponents' well, uses his punches to set up his passes and shows excellent technical skills. He also remains very active on the ground, where he looks to wears his opponents down with the pace he pushes from the top. A former BJJ World Champion, Reis is extremely comfortable fighting off his back where he's great at working his sweeps and reversing positions. In particular, he's fond of working from the half guard where he's armed with beautiful sweeps and a solid submission game. Reis is also very effective at creating and working in scrambles, and his overall technique, credentials and submissions skills (offensive and defensive) are very strong and proficient.
