An American Top Team product and one of the most naturally gifted prospects on the planet; Tyron Woodley is an up and coming fighter very close to breaking through as legitimate force in the welterweight division. Woodley is a supremely gifted natural athlete whose raw physical abilities rank amongst the very best in the division (Koscheck, St-Pierre-esque), and athletically there are only a handful of fighters on the same level as him in the division. An intelligent fighter, Woodley is taking his career very seriously and has spent time with the likes of Team Quest, American Kickboxing Academy, and The HIT Squad prior to joining ATT. Woodley was a two-time NCAA Division I All-American wrestler at the University of Missouri and enters the sport with very solid amateur wrestling credentials. His style of wrestling is perfectly suited to MMA as he is one of the most explosive athletes in the division with a beautiful double leg, powerful takedowns and big slams (see bouts with Bears, Woods and Light below). Woodley drives through opponents with ease and has had no difficulties in getting the fight to the ground in his early career. On the ground he shows the makings of being a complete grappler as he possesses good ground and pound skills and a rapidly improving technical ground game thanks to his training at ATT. He actively looks to improve positions, displays good ground control and shows excellent submissions awareness as well as the technical proficiency needed to pull those submissions off. An intelligent fighter, Woodley effectively uses his ground and pound skills to set up submission attempts and is particularly fond of transitioning to arm triangle attempts from mount. Woodley's submission game is coming together very nicely and given his already explosive wrestling abilities possesses incredible potential in his MMA grappling game. When watching Woodley fight one can't help but notice how physically gifted he is. He's tremendously quick and fast and it really shows on his feet, as he's light and nimble on his feet, moves very well and seems to be moving twice as fast as his opponents do (at least thus far). Woodley is composed on his feet, keeps his hands up and doesn't get too wild and although his striking game is still coming along, all the natural tools are there in order for him to become a complete MMA fighter. He's equipped with naturally fast hands, a good right cross and overhand right, displays sound counter striking abilities and shows excellent overall awareness in his standup. Showing all-around skills on his feet, Woodley also does good work in the clinch with good knees and does show intelligence in trying to vary his striking. While Woodley will need to continue working on his standup skills, he's immensely talented and has a chance to develop into a dangerous striker and a complete MMA fighter.
