ANALYSIS
A Strikeforce, Ring of Fire and WEC veteran, Tyler Toner is a promising fighter currently competing in the featherweight division. Toner is a former Ring of Fire and Ring of Fire Yong Guns Featherweight champion. Very dedicated to his training, Toner is known for his excellent conditioning, ability to push a high pace, and never back down attitude.
Toner is an aggressive striker who trains his standup with UFC vet Duane Ludwig. He possesses good technique, solid power and offers good variety on his feet. Toner's armed with an impressive arsenal of kicks that he works both high and low on his opponents. An intelligent striker, Toner makes very good use of his leg kicks, showing the ability to throw quick inside and solid outside leg kicks. He's also good at coming up with quick switch kicks and powerful right high kicks. Far from one dimensional, Toner's also shown a quick right hand and a nice uppercut. He possesses excellent power in his striking, witnessed during a 2006 victory over Shoot Fighting World Champion Kenichi Ogata. Ogata was brutally knocked (and stretchered) out by a vicious high kick, in a fight that was conducted under shoot fighting rules no less. Toner's shown good counter striking skill, including a nice counter right cross and counter left hook. Toner is a cerebral striker who uses his reach well, and also does a good job of keeping his opponents' at the end of his punches. From in close, Toner shows good clinch skills and the ability to deliver quick knees. A well-rounded striker, Toner backs his kicks with punches impressively in putting together tidy combinations on his feet (see his finish of Brandon Visher). Although Toner is a little stiff with his movement, his style has worked very well for him. He's comfortable standing as well as technically, composed and methodical in his approach.
Toner will need to work on his wrestling, top control and takedown defense (lack of which was the main culprit behind his loss to Scott Jorgensen). Toner trains his BJJ at Easton Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and is a competent grappler whose comfortable competing off his back. He works his sweeps and submissions, operates from rubber guard when necessary, and shows nice half guard sweeps off his back. He's able to posture up from the top and land big punches from inside his opponents guard. Although his progress has been encouraging, Toner's BJJ game is still a work in progress. He'll need to get better at controlling his opponent from the bottom, and getting accustomed to the ground and pound attack of his opponents.
