ANALYSIS
Trey Houston is a Miletich Martial Arts fighter and MMA prospect in the middleweight division. Although he comes to the sport with good size and athletic abilities, Houston doesn't possess any traditional martial arts base or background. He was a high level rugby player at the University of Tulsa and is known for being an intelligent, well educated and witty individual (see his website). Working towards two college degrees, Houston's long-term future in the sport will largely center around how fiscally feasible it will be for him going forward.
A long time rugby player, Houston is a physically strong athlete whose raw power is prevalent in his takedown attempts. He displays nice slams and trips as well as a good sprawl and solid takedown defense. Houston is particularly impressive at reversing takedown attempts (also attributable to his rugby background), creating scrambles, and ending up with top position on the ground. A smooth grappler, Houston possesses a strong positional top game, showing good transitions and guard passes. He works a controlled ground and pound game, transitions nicely between positions and shows excellent composure for his age and experience. Off his back Houston has shown active guard skills, and good submission awareness. He shows development in his submission game in working for gogoplatas, armbars and kneebars, as well as showing good sweeps and reversals. Houston's technique continues to progress nicely and he does hold tremendous potential in his MMA ground game.
Standing, Houston hasn't shown overwhelming power or hand speed but he does put his punches together and work his 1-2 combo. He throws a good left hook, works his leg kicks and shows competency from in close. On more than one occasion he's demonstrated the ability to latch on to the thai plum where he can deliver powerful knees in rapid succession. Houston shows the makings of a defensively responsible striker on his feet, and although he will need to continue working on his technical skills there's plenty of room for improvement.

OUTLOOK
Trey Houston is an athletic middleweight who holds intriguing upside in his ground game. He's young and talented, but entering the sport with no base will need to continue making improvements in his overall game. His long-term commitment to mixed martial arts is also unknown, but with continued work and dedication to his training, Houston has top fifteen potential.
