ANALYSIS
Tony Johnson Jr. is a uniquely talented heavyweight prospect currently training with American Top Team. Standing only 6'1" tall - Johnson weighs in at a massive 285 pounds (he has weighed as high as 365 pounds), but despite his size and appearance is often lauded for his natural athletic abilities. Extremely quick and agile for a man his size, Johnson was a promising football player who was once clocked running a 4.5 second 40 yard dash. After high school he went on to become a two-sport standout at Iowa State University, and eventually finished his collegiate career with thoughts of going the pro football route as well as having Olympic aspirations as a wrestler. In just his fourth professional fight Johnson scored a dominating decision victory over respected veteran Tony Lopez (Lopez had twenty pro fights and was on a fourteen fight win streak entering the bout) to capture the King of the Cage Heavyweight Championship, and he definitely holds very intriguing potential as a heavyweight fighter.
Wrestling since the age of six, Johnson enjoyed a decorated amateur career that saw him win state high school wrestling championships, earn Division I All-American status while at Iowa State University, and secure Olympic training invitations (among many other accomplishment/awards) prior to embarking on his mixed martial arts career. That wrestling pedigree plays an integral role in shaping his game as Johnson's best attributes are his takedowns and ground and pound capabilities. Johnson is a physically strong heavyweight who possesses excellent takedowns and big slams, and really enjoys powering opponents to the mat and pounding away at them from top position. Johnson is an agile fighter who moves around incredibly well on the mat despite his size, while also displaying excellent ground and pound potential and the ability to unleash punches and hammer fists very quickly from top position. While Johnson's ground control and dexterity are excellent, his BJJ skills are still green and he has found himself in precarious positions on the ground. His sub awareness will need work - especially inside the guard of competent grapplers, and Johnson will need to continue working on the intricacies of his submission and ground games. Standing, Johnson's speed and quickness is apparent in his striking as he's blessed with good hand speed and fast kicks. Overall his standup's still a work in progress and the overall development in his striking will play an important role in what he's able to accomplish long-term in the division.

OUTLOOK
Early on, Johnson's earned praise for his speed/size combination, excellent wrestling base and natural athletic talents. Furthermore, in ATT he's found himself one of the top camps in the sport and has shown potential in his standup game. He definitely has work to do but the talent is unquestionable; with continued work he has the potential to mould himself into a top ten heavyweight.
