ANALYSIS
A well respected fighter on the British MMA scene, Tom Watson is a Cage Rage, BAMMA, and MFC veteran competing in the middleweight division. Currently splitting his training time between Montreal and Albuquerque, New Mexico, Watson is part of both the Jackson's Submission Fighting and Zahabi MMA fight teams. Watson holds notable wins over Travis Galbraith and Matt Horwich, the latter of which saw him win the first ever BAMMA Middleweight Championship.
Watson is a confident kickboxer who prefers to keep the fight standing. Watson's striking game consists of diversity and strong technical skill. He shows good defensive awareness and fights with strong composure throughout his fights. Watson's armed with nice footwork, fast hands, a quick jab and a good right cross. He makes good use of brisk leg kicks and powerful high kicks (see his knockout of Travis Galbraith), as well as showing he can come straight up the middle with hard knees. Watson does a good job of varying the location of his striking, working the body and legs nicely with his punch-kick combinations. Watson is very methodical in his approach, doing well to avoid wasting energy or taking unnecessary damage standing. He gets in and out of range quickly, and overall possesses a tidy, technical and precise standup game.
Watson's grappling game will require work, with a major area of concern being his wrestling. Watson is almost too relaxed during his bouts, and puts up very little struggle to avoid being taken down. Furthermore, while he's shown the composure to stay calm when put in difficulty, Watson does give up position very easily and will get caught in sub attempts. Watson has an active guard game, intelligently using his submissions to pass or sweep off his back (kimura guard sweep, omoplata to side, etc). He also shows excellent cardio, and seems to get stronger as the fight moves into the later stages. Training with Greg Jackson and Firas Zahabi, Watson does have the benefit of two coaches who appreciate the importance of wrestling and positional ground skills more than maybe any other trainers in the sport.

OUTLOOK
Tom Watson is a strong tactician on his feet who's capable of handling himself well when the fight's kept standing. The primary point of his arsenal that requires work will be his grappling, as Watson will need to significantly improve his wrestling and takedown defense. Those two areas of his repertoire will play pivotal roles in the success he's able to achieve in North America, but with continued work Watson is potentially a top twenty fighter.
