ANALYSIS
Best known for being one of the youngest fighters to ever set foot in the UFC, Tom Egan is an up and coming Irish fighter currently competing in the welterweight division. At just twenty years of age and less than a year into his professional career, amazingly Egan made his UFC debut in early 2009 where he showed brief glimpses of his long term potential, but also his relative inexperience and lack of seasoning. Cut by the company shortly thereafter, Egan will need to continue developing his skills outside the UFC in order to take his game to the next level.

On his feet, Egan displays the potential to develop into a solid MMA striker with the aggressive approach and raw abilities he's shown early in his career. Through his first five bouts, Egan's exhibited good hand speed, a quick right cross and has also displayed solid counter punching abilities. Possessing a powerful right hand, Egan often loads up with an overhand right which has served him well in his early career. Though not afraid to stand and trade, often times he will keep his hands low and resort to throwing wild haymakers and in that regard his striking abilities are not very technically refined. Egan will also need to continue improving his footwork, defense, and his overall technical aptitude on his feet in order to become a complete standup fighter. Still very early in his career however, Egan has earned high praise from well respected muay thai coach Marc DellaGrotte, whom he began training with shortly after making his UFC debut for his quick learning curve and overall striking potential.

While he certainly doesn't shy away from the standup, Egan's ground skills, wrestling, takedown defense and overall grappling ability will need significant improvement as demonstrated in his bout with John Hathaway. In that fight Egan was taken down multiple times with no difficulty, pounded on, and soundly outclassed on the ground eventually resulting in a TKO loss. While that loss did highlight some major holes in Egan's game, it has to be stressed that he was very inexperienced entering that fight (just a year into his pro career) - not nearly enough seasoning for a fighter of his age to be competing in an organization and division as deep and talented as the UFC's welterweight division. The loss to Hathaway notwithstanding, Egan has not looked completely lost on the ground and has actually displayed good composure and sound basic grappling skills early in his career. Through the first four fights of his career he's shown the awareness and ability to get the fight to the ground when it's to his advantage and the aptitude to improve his positions and pass guard. He's displayed good basic submissions skills, in both looking for and defending against opportunities and has exhibited good ground control and solid ground and pound potential from the top. Egan has also proven very difficult to hold down when he's been put on his back. The big issue with Egan is that he is extremely green and his skills are not very refined which should come as no surprise given his age and experience. In an attempt to take his training to the next level Egan began training in the United States shortly after his bout with Hathaway, and what effect that will have on his ground skills will become clearer in his next few bouts.
OUTLOOK
Tom Egan will definitely need to get more experience under his belt, continue working on his all-around MMA game, and he would probably be better served by dropping down to lightweight but he has the potential to develop into a solid fighter. It is extremely difficult to project his long term potential given how young and new to the sport he is, but if he can continue to improve his skills at a decent pace he has the chance to develop into a top twenty fighter.
