ANALYSIS
Hailing from Belgium, Tarec Saffiedine is a hardworking welterweight prospect and veteran of the Strikeforce and DREAM promotions. Saffiedine comes from a striking background having trained extensively in tae kwon do, karate and muay thai prior to embarking on his mixed martial arts career, and does hold a 12-1-1 amateur kickboxing record. Originally trained out of his home country of Belgium, Saffiedine relocated to California in 2009 joining Team Quest where he has continued to train on a permanent basis. Known for his excellent work ethic, Saffiedine appears to be very committed to his MMA career and training going forward.
Although he isn't known for being an overly heavy hitter on his feet, Saffiedine does possess very good technical skills and growing power in his standup game. He's extremely comfortable standing and effortlessly transitions between orthodox and southpaw stances. Saffiedine has also shown a nice set of hands, displaying good hand speed, and a good right cross, overhand right and left hook. Saffiedine is also equipped with a very good set of kicks, making effective use of powerful, cutting leg kicks and quick head kicks. Saffiedine also regularly incorporates Brazilian kicks into his standup arsenal and he's been able to deliver those kicks with a high degree of success in past fights. From in close he'll look to grab his opponents in the thai plum where he's good at delivering quick knees to his opponents' head and body. Given his quickness Saffiedine is also a strong counter puncher, and he showed his standup efficiency in his Strikeforce debut - battering James Terry on the feet for the three rounds of their fight. Extremely comfortable standing in the pocket, Saffiedine also displays good head movement and defensive instincts, and overall he possesses a versatile, technical and effective striking game.
Training alongside Team Quest, Saffiedine has continued to experience improvements in his wrestling and takedown defense over the course of his career. He's displayed terrific balance and an ever improving sprawl (see bout with Yoon), and was able to defend against James Terry's (who is an experienced amateur and collegiate wrestler) takedowns for the majority of their bout while keeping the fighting on the ground to a minimum. As that bout and others have proven, Saffiedine is also difficult to control on the mat. He's an active grappler when operating from guard position, but he will need to work on continuing to refine his BJJ and ground skills. A crafty grappler, Saffiedine will look to pass guard and improve positions from the top, possesses a very sneaky submission game (the majority of his bouts have come via sub., see bout with Sebastian Grandin) and is effective at shifting between positions while being more then capable of capitalizing on opportunities on the ground. Although he's far from being an elite wrestler, Saffiedine is also capable of getting the fight to the ground with trips and takedowns from in close as he continues to work hard on his wrestling.

OUTLOOK
Tarec Saffiedine has continued to show improvement over his career and currently holds technically sound standup skills to compliment his improving submission and wrestling games. He also has an excellent work ethic and has shown the intelligence and aptitude to continue working on those areas of his game that require the most work. Only 23 years of age, Saffiedine has plenty of time to continue working on his skills and he does hold top ten potential at welterweight.
