ANALYSIS
At the age of twenty and just one year into his mixed martial arts training, amazingly Tamdan McCrory made his debut with the UFC where he became known for the ultra-aggressive and extremely exciting style of fighting that he brought with him into the cage. Although he was released from his contract two and a half years later, McCrory did get a cup of coffee with the top MMA organization in the world and if he is able to continue developing his skills outside the UFC, could once again find himself competing in a top promotion.
At 6'4", McCrory is a very tall welterweight who enjoys a significant reach advantage over much of the division. Incredibly aggressive on his feet, McCrory does not waste any time in immediately going right after his opponents, pressing the action and constantly keeping his hands going looking to land big strikes and combinations (see bouts with Gono, Madigan and Hazelett). As he's matured he has learned to pick his spots a little better, and will need to continue doing so as he does sometimes leave himself open to counters and to being taken down. A well-rounded striker, McCrory is good at mixing up his strikes on his feet where he makes effective use of leg kicks and a good left switch kick (that he really likes to target his opponent's head and torso with), as well as good hands, and a solid clinch game consisting of good knees and dirty boxing skills (see Luke Cummo fight). At 23 years of age McCrory has shown a good repertoire of skills on his feet, while still leaving plenty of time for further improvements.
While McCrory isn't an elite MMA wrestler, he does have a Greco-Roman wrestling background and will try to take the fight to the ground when it suits him, looking to land big elbows and punches from top position (see bouts with Madigan and Cummo). McCrory also has a very active submission game and shows excellent awareness in looking for, and attempting to take advantage of those submission opportunities in whatever position they may present themselves. McCrory twice attempted flying triangles against John Howard standing, had Luke Cummo in all kinds of trouble with armbars and chokes over the duration of their bout, and has slowly been developing a competent submission game to compliment his standup abilities. Although he's displayed a developing submission game, his technical skills on the ground are not quite on par with the attentiveness he's shown in searching for those opportunities. His attempts are often loose, and opponents have been able to get out of even deeply sunk submissions in the past, and to that end McCrory will need to work on tightening up his technical jiu jitsu and ground games and get better at finishing his submissions once he's found them.
Although McCrory is active off his back and does well to avoid taking damage on the ground, he will need to work on refining the technical facets of his guard game. He has been taken down and controlled on the ground in his career and had his guard easily passed in bouts with Akihiro Gono, Pete Spratt, and John Howard and was then mounted. McCrory's strength and takedown defense are also an area of concern going forward. This was really evident in his bout with John Howard who simply powered out of any precarious positions McCrory was able to get him into (submissions or positionally), took him down at will, and both he and Pete Spratt were able to toss McCrory around at times without too much trouble. Part of this could be due to the weight McCrory has to cut fighting at 170 pounds, who - at 6'4", may be better served by adding some strength and size to his frame, and moving up to middleweight.

OUTLOOK
Tamdan McCrory is a good striker and possesses decent wrestling skills but doesn't yet have a top shelf jiu jitsu or submission game. McCrory isn't an athletically imposing fighter and his game doesn't have the explosiveness which is found in the elite fighters in the division, so it's imperative that his game be as technically efficient as possible. McCrory displays good, but not great potential in many areas of his game but is far from being a finished product. With continued work he has top fifteen potential in the sport.
