ANALYSIS
Training under fellow Norwegian Joachim Hansen as part of the Hellboy Hansen MMA team, Simeon Thoresen is a very highly regarded welterweight prospect and one of the top fighters currently competing on the European fight circuit. An intelligent fighter, Thoresen displays excellent fight awareness and a very technical, composed, and patient MMA game that has seen him slowly piece together an increasingly well rounded skillset, and continue his development as a complete mixed martial artist. Thoresen originally began his martial arts training in karate and kickboxing, but eventually shifted his attention to the grappling side of things which is the area of his game that he's become most noted for thus far in his career.
Growing up in Norway it shouldn't come as a surprise that Thoresen doesn't have the same amateur wresting experience that many of his American counterparts do, but he does have a submission wrestling background and has shown the ability to get the fight to the ground with good takedowns - especially in the clinch. On the ground, Thoresen displays a very technically sound, smooth grappling game that has played a major role in the early successes of his MMA career. A competent grappler whether he's fighting off his back or from top position, Thoresen's ground game flows well and he has shown the ability to effortlessly transition from one position to the next. Thoresen also possesses a high level submission game (watch him slide down from back control to finish Cole Lauristen with a beautiful armbar below) and if given the chance is able to lock in a sub very quickly, as he is constantly aware of submission opportunities in whatever position they may arise (ten of his eleven wins have come via tapout). Given his quick hips, flexibility, long legs and strong technical abilities, Thoresen has proven particularly effective fighting off his back with triangle chokes and armbar attempts and at the same time also possesses very good defensive guard skills. With a crisp and composed ground and pound game to boot, Thoresen exhibits incredible upside as a grappler and displays all the makings of developing into a complete ground fighter in the sport given further seasoning.
Thoresen also remains very technical with his standup where he displays good footwork - looking light and nimble on his feet, remains calm and composed and shows good defensive skills constantly keeping his hands up, chin tucked and keeping an effective range from his opponent. Unlike many young fighters, Thoresen does not have an overly aggressive or wild striking style, but instead looks to pick his spots and prefers to counterpunch. An intelligent striker, Thoresen also makes good use of his 6'1" reach with a quick jab and a good right cross. At times Thoresen does look slightly stiff on his feet and his overall striking skills are not quite as polished as his grappling abilities are, and to that end he will need to continue working on his standup abilities in order to round out his skills and continue becoming a more complete overall fighter.

OUTLOOK
Simeon Thoresen is an intelligent fighter whose MMA game is technically sound across the board. He displays excellent potential as a grappler, and is a smart striker who has shown a steady development in his standup skills. Thoresen will need to continue working on his all around game and given that his pure wrestling abilities will never be considered top notch, it makes it all the more important that his striking and ground games continue to improve. With bigger fights and more name recognition Thoresen should hopefully have the resources to focus 100% on his very promising fight career, as he does have top fifteen potential in the welterweight division.
