ANALYSIS
Shigeki Osawa is a promising featherweight prospect currently training at the Yoshido Dojo in Chiba, Japan. Before he began training in mixed martial arts, Osawa was a successful amateur wrestler who comes to the sport with a solid background and good wrestling credentials. While attending wrestling powerhouse Yamanashi Gakuin University , Osawa captured the All-Japan Freestyle Wrestling Championship in his freshman year (2007), and also went on to win Gold at the 8th World University Wrestling Championships in Greece in 2008 (both in the 60kg weight class). Osawa also has Olympic aspirations for 2012, and is an excellent athlete who's proven to be incredibly quick, fast, and strong.

The raw power and athleticism Osawa's armed with is very apparent in his game as he picks opponents' up with ease and effortlessly powers out of bad spots on the mat. Osawa wrestling plays a big role in his game and he does possess an excellent arsenal of takedown, slams, and throws. His strength and wrestling base make him particularly impressive with suplexes and slams, witnessed during a memorable sequence in his bout with Kyung Ho Kang when he landed three straight German Suplexes in succession, with grace, precision and power. Osawa also shows excellent balance and takedown defense, and is a patient, composed grappler who shows very good control from the top. Osawa's a good athlete who can naturally deliver powerful punches on the ground, but his overall ground and pound game - while promising, is still very green. He's found himself in tight spots on more than one occasion on the mat, but he's displayed good submission defense and the ability to calmly work himself out of those situations. Osawa's still very inexperienced and raw on the mat, and he'll need to work on expanding his offensive grappling arsenal and being more active on the ground. While Osawa's grappling/ground potential is exciting, he'll need to focus on his guard, BJJ, and overall technical ground skills.

Osawa's equipped with good natural hand speed, solid punching power and a good athletic base, but his overall standup is extremely green. While he does do well to mix up his punches and kicks, Osawa's technical and defensive skill are still very raw and unrefined. He'll drop his hands when he strikes, get reckless with his punching and at times will resort to throwing wild haymakers on his feet. Osawa will need to tighten up his defense and really focus on his technical striking game, and while his standup game is definitely a work in progress - the raw tools are there for him to develop into a competent striker on his feet.
OUTLOOK
Shigeki Osawa is still green and very raw, but also undeniably talented. He's a good athlete with a solid wrestling background who'll need to continue working on his striking and overall technique. Osawa is certainly a project, but with the right training and experience he has a chance to develop into a top ten fighter in the featherweight division.
