ANALYSIS
Shane del Rosario is an up and coming heavyweight prospect currently training out Irvine, California as a member of Team Oyama. An EliteXC, King of the Cage and M-1 Challenge veteran, del Rosario is currently signed to the Strikeforce roster where he is one of the organizations top young talents in the heavyweight division. Del Rosario was initially known for his standup abilities and does come to the sport with a strong professional muay thai background, but has worked diligently on his ground game and is becoming increasingly more respected for his ever improving submission skills.
Del Rosario does possess a very solid muay thai base and holds the distinction of being the first ever WBC Heavyweight Muay Thai Champion. It almost goes without saying but del Rosario is a good technical striker who always fights with composure on his feet. He's an intelligent fighter who doesn't get wild or caught up in looking for the big punch, and is a diverse striker who works over his opponent's entire body. Standing southpaw, del Rosario has an excellent left straight, good kicks to the legs, head and body of his opponents (see bout with Dool Hee Lee) and a good muay thai clinch. While there's no doubting the fact that del Rosario has a solid striking base, he's far from an untouchable, dominating fighter on his feet. He isn't an explosive, one punch knockout kind of striker and he has been caught and hurt in the past. He was dropped very badly in the opening moments of his bout with Brandon Cash but showed tremendous heart and resolve in working his way back to score a very impressive submission win.
An intelligent fighter with an excellent approach to the sport, del Rosario understands the importance in rounding out his game and has worked diligently on his takedown defense, wrestling and BJJ skills. And while Del Rosario has improved his takedown defense as his career's progressed, he is far from being an elite wrestler and can be taken to the ground. On the ground he has a very active guard game and works extremely hard fighting off his back, looking to finish and throwing up lots of submission attempts. Del Rosario showed off his ever improving submission game in his bout with Brandon Cash, as he came back from being very badly hurt to score a highlight reel, come from behind omoplata submission victory. Del Rosario's made strides in the right direction but his ground game is still developing, he'll need to get better at defending strikes on the ground and there are concerns surrounding his size fighting at heavyweight. He still has lots of work to do on his ground skills in order to have any kind of chance of matching up with the better heavyweight in the world, but it is very encouraging that he is working on shoring up the holes in his game.

OUTLOOK
Shane del Rosario definitely has work to do but he already boasts a polished standup game and has shown steady improvements in his grappling abilities as his career's moved forward. The key to his long-term prospects in the division will likely hinder on the level he can get his overall ground game to, so it's imperative that del Rosario continue improving his technical ground skills. In a division very thin on top level talent, del Rosario has top ten potential with continued work.
