ANALYSIS
A Sengoku and Pancrase veteran, Seiya Kawahara is a young, talented prospect currently competing in the bantamweight division. Kawahara is a good athlete who shows quick instincts, good speed and nice power, and he did move up a weight class to compete in Sengoku's inaugural featherweight grand prix in 2009.
On his feet, Kawahara is a willing combatant who isn't shy about letting his hands go. He possesses fast hands, good power and has proven capable of finishing with his strikes early in his career. Kawahara's armed with a nice left hook and right cross, and shows diversity in his punching as he works both the head and body with his punch combinations. He also mixes in his kicks and is especially good at deliver a quick, powerful right head kick. An aggressive fighter, Kawahara likes pushing the pace of the standup and doesn't hesitate about opening up and going for the finish when senses his opponent's in danger. Still very young, Kawahara has a tendency to keep his guard low - leaving himself particularly susceptible to counters, a characteristic that strong counter-strikers have taken advantage of in past bouts (see fight with Nick Denis.) Kawahara will need to tighten up his defensive skills while continuing to refine his striking arsenal, but his early fights given plenty of reason to be optimistic about his future development as an MMA striker.
Kawahara isn't a wrestler by trade but will attempt to take his opponents down if he sees fit. He's armed with a solid arsenal of takedowns and throws from in close, and prefers utilizing an aggressive ground and pound game from top position. He able to get his punches off very rapidly, and likes posturing up or standing over his opponent and trying to land big, heavy punches on the mat. Kawahara is quick off his back with hip escapes and difficult to control on the mat, although he will need to continue working on the technical intricacies (guard, submissions, BJJ) of his ground game.

OUTLOOK
Seiya Kawahara is still very young and raw although he's shown potential in his MMA game. He's a good athlete who's displayed good speed, power and ground and pound potential. He'll need to continue refining his overall game while paying particular attention to his ground game, but with continued work Kawahara holds top fifteen potential in the bantamweight division.
