ANALYSIS
Fighting out of Metz’s Combat Club, Sam Alvey’s an MMA prospect who’s competed for King of the Cage. With training in wrestling, pankration, and judo, Alvey has a diversified background that has seen him achieve success in multiple disciplines. Alvey has fought as low as 185 pounds and as high as heavyweight, so given his versatility across weight divisions and his martial art background, he does hold intriguing potential as a fighter.
Alvey wrestled for his high school team during his junior and senior years, before proceeding to Lakeland College where he would continue his career at the NCAA Division III level. Upon graduation, Alvey began studying pankration, eventually achieving distinction with a Silver Medal winning performance at the 2008 FILA World Pankration Championships. Early in his career his grappling background has been evident, as Alvey’s shown good balance, a nice sprawl and smooth takedowns. Alvey possesses a promising ground and pound game on the mat, working his elbows nicely to the opposition’s head and body. Alvey throws powerful hammer fists and punches from the top, showing effectiveness from inside his opponent’s guard and side control.
Alvey has pro muay thai matches in his pocket, one of which was a knockout win over respected MMA veteran Nick Thompson. Standing southpaw, Alvey’s equipped with very good reach, particularly competing at middleweight. Relaxed on his feet, Alvey shows no hesitation in letting his fists fly. He’s equipped with a strong clinch game, a good left hand and respectable punching power. He throws big knees up the middle, and although his defense will need refining his striking game certainly holds potential.
