ANALYSIS
Fighting out of Alberta, Canada and Hayabusa Team Yokai, Ryan Jimmo is a big, strong and talented prospect currently competing in the light heavyweight division. Growing up, Jimmo was heavily involved in karate having learnt the martial art from his father (who was a 5th degree black belt) at an early age. Very committed to his training, Jimmo would go on to participate in over 1000 karate fights and secure himself Gold and Silver Medals at the Pan-American Games. That training would also lay the foundation for his future career as a mixed martial artist, having learned about the discipline, focus and work ethic required to perform at a high level. A powerful all-around athlete, Jimmo would go on to become a standout high school football player and a promising amateur bodybuilder before eventually setting his sights on mixed martial arts. Turning pro in 2007, Jimmo has enjoyed a very promising start to his MMA career. In his first three years as a professional he's already earned victories against UFC veteran's Wilson Gouveia, Marvin Eastman, and Jesse Forbes, in addition to notable wins over former TKO Champion Chris Fontaine, former World Champion Kickboxer Rick Roufus, and against quality light heavyweight Emmanuel Newton.

Jimmo's karate background is prevalent in both his stance and his striking arsenal as his footwork and kicks are his biggest strengths standing. Deceptively quick in spite of his size, Jimmo effectively uses his footwork to rapidly get in and out of range while doing a good job of measuring distance and using his reach well from the outside. He's armed with a nice assortment of leg kicks (quick inside leg kicks, powerful outside leg kicks), quick switch kicks, and shows intelligence in working the head, legs and body of his opponent. While Jimmo does rely heavily on his kicks when standing, he's also proven capable of delivering powerful knees from in close and does come equipped with good power in his right hand. Jimmo's first preference is to work his striking from the outside, and although he will need to continue working on his offensive clinch skills he does display good control from the inside. He's also shown sound counter striking abilities, and overall he does bring a methodical, patient approach to his striking game.

An intelligent fighter, Jimmo continues to work hard on rounding out his MMA game. Although he's primarily known for his striking, Jimmo does possess a high school wrestling background and has proven capable of taking the fight to the ground. He's shown strong trips and body lock takedowns from in close, as well as good control and a composed, methodical ground and pound game from top position. If Jimmo feels he has his opponent hurt he'll open up and start dropping big punches and elbows, but he usually fights with patience and composure on the mat. Jimmo prefers fighting from top position on the ground, and has shown a good sprawl and solid takedown defense (although his wrestling is far from thoroughly tested). A big, strong light heavyweight, Jimmo's very difficult to control on his back and he's shown an innate ability to muscle his way back to his feet. He does come armed with a good defensive guard game, although offensively he doesn't offer up much off his back. His usual plan of attack is to look for ways to get the fight back standing (by hanging on, pushing off and getting back up, etc.), and going forward he will need to continue getting himself accustomed to the intricacies of the guard game. Jimmo's takedown defense, guard skills and jiu jitsu abilities will likely play a major role in his progression in the sport, and Ryan will need to make a concerted effort to improve them as much as possible.
OUTLOOK
Ryan Jimmo is a talented athlete who possesses the intelligence and physical abilities necessary to strive in this sport. He's powerful and athletic, comes from a strong karate background and has enjoyed a very encouraging start to his MMA career. Still a little rough around the edges, Jimmo will need to continue working on his grappling and ground games but with the right training and time to develop, he has a definite shot at maturing into a top ten light heavyweight.
