ANALYSIS
An incredibly talented natural athlete, Ryan Ford is a three year veteran of the Canadian fight circuit and a highly touted prospect in the welterweight division. At one point Ford was one of the main attractions of the Maximum Fighting Championships (largest Canadian MMA promotion), before a falling out with MFC Owner and President Mark Pavelich caused the parties to sever ties and go their separate ways.

First and foremost Ford in an explosive athlete who possesses excellent speed, strength and quickness, and whose natural skill set and raw tools are absolutely top notch. Ford has all the natural talent necessary to succeed in the sport and he holds enticing power-speed potential as a mixed martial artist. Ford explosiveness is very apparent with his striking as he has fast heavy hands, good kicks, significant power and the ability to inflict a tremendous amount of damage in a very short time. Ford moves well on his feet and over time has slowly been developing a competent technical game to compliment that vast talent on his feet. Although he'll need to continue working on polishing off his striking skills, Ford's raw skills are unquestionable and he has all the tools (explosive athleticism, speed, and power) necessary to develop into an outstanding overall striker. While Ford doesn't have the wrestling pedigree of some, he's been able to use his quickness and strength to power through his opponents with strong takedowns and has become noted for his big slams and his ability to muscle opponents to the ground. Technically, Ford isn't the most proficient wrestler and will need to work on his takedown defense and overall wrestling skills as he does have a tendency to rely considerably on his natural athleticism. On the ground, Ford shows strong ground and pound skills and makes very effective use of elbows and punches from inside his opponent's guard. Ford has the ability to unload very quickly with a powerful attack from top position and if he's not defended properly he will finish the fight in a quick and brutal fashion (he holds three TKO/KO stoppages that lasted less than a minute; two that lasted less than 30 seconds - see bouts with Mazany and Walsh below). While Ford's holds exciting wrestling and ground and pound potential, he will need to make significant improvement in is his technical grappling skills and his submission defense. Ford seems to rely heavily on his athletic abilities (in all aspects of his game really), and has been able to use the quickness and strength advantage he usually enjoys over opponents to simply power out of bad positions on the ground (ie. if he's mounted, given up his back, etc.). Ford also continuously leaves himself open to submission attempts - especially from inside his opponent's guard, and his usual method of getting out is to power or slam his way free. In his first bout with Pat Healy, he was dominating the majority of the fight but was being caught in numerous submission attempts in the process (most of which he was able to get out of), before finally being submitted by an armbar. Ford's shown glimpses of being a dominating fighter in the sport but to fully get there he will need to realize that his natural talent will need to be complimented by strong technical skills.
OUTLOOK
There's no doubting the fact that Ryan Ford is an incredibly talented athlete who has all the raw physical tools necessary to succeed in the sport. It would be very interesting to see what kind of fighter a more experienced camp could mould Ford's skills into, as he has the potential to develop into an excellent fighter in all areas of the game. It remains to be seen if Ford will ever be able to match his vast natural talents with equal parts technique to really "put it all together", but if he does he has the potential to develop into an impact, top ten fighter in the welterweight division.
