ANALYSIS
One of the most naturally gifted prospects in the welterweight division, Roger Bowling is an up and coming fighter currently signed to the Strikeforce roster. Training out of Cincinnati, Ohio and the Vision MMA camp, Bowling brings to the table an exciting blend of strong striking skills combined with exceptional raw physical tools. Bowling is incredibly fast, quick and strong and his natural skills and athletic abilities are on par with almost anyone you will find in the division. Mentally strong, well hyped and possessing the wherewithal to not rush things, Bowling is very committed to his MMA career and has a chance to develop into a top fighter for years to come.
Bowling has shown the ability to be downright explosive in his career, and exhibits phenomenal potential in his standup abilities. A strong striker, Bowling did have an amateur boxing background prior to his MMA career and he possesses very fast hands, good footwork and devastating punching power. With a steadily improving repertoire of leg kicks and high kicks to complement his hands, Bowling shows progress towards developing into a complete fighter on his feet. Technically he will need to tighten up and continue polishing off his striking skills but the raw power, speed, athleticism and explosive natural abilities are all apparent and with proper training and more experience he's fully capable of becoming an exceptional MMA striker.
Despite having no amateur wrestling background whatsoever, Bowling displays strong, powerful takedowns and wrestling abilities driving straight through his opponents to get them to the mat. In fact his wrestling abilities are often cited as being one of the strongest points in his game despite his lack of experience in the area - just another testament to his athletic abilities. For most fighters a lack of any kind of grappling background would usually raise red flags, but given Bowling's natural tools and how rapidly he's been picking up the game he has the ability to develop into an above average wrestler with very good takedowns. From top position Bowling looks to posture up and deliver an unrelenting ground and pound attack, simply outmuscling his opponents and throwing big powerful punches - a tactic that has proven brutally efficient early in his career (see bout with Runge). In the past when he has gotten in trouble he's been able to use his strength to simply power out of those positions, but against the top welterweights in the world that's a tactic that simply won't prove effective. Even by his own admission his jiu jitsu game, submission skills and technical grappling abilities are an area of his game that will need continued work. Very active at all times, Bowling doesn't appear to get tired and has gone on record as saying that his cardiovascular training is one of the biggest strengths in his game, although it should be noted that it hasn't been really tested yet as none of his fights have made it past the first round.

OUTLOOK
The sky is the limit for Roger Bowling who has the natural tools necessary to flourish in the sport. Bowling has been picking up the game very rapidly, with his takedowns, boxing and raw power leading the way. He'll need to pay particular attention to his ground skills as well as making continued progress in his wrestling abilities, but given more experience, training, and the suitable camp to mould his natural athletic abilities, he has top end potential of developing into a high calibre top five - ten welterweight.
