ANALYSIS
Rick Story is a promising welterweight fighter and UFC prospect. An athletic standout in high school, Story excelled in baseball, football, track and on the wrestling mat. Hardworking and dedicated, Story continued his wrestling success at the collegiate level where he would eventually earn All-American status during his senior year. After going 5-0 as an amateur, Story made the decision to turn pro where he's enjoyed a successful start to his fighting career.
Story had a wrestling background and good pedigree prior to pursuing a career in fighting. He was a good high school wrestler who began his collegiate career wrestling at Pacific Lutheran University (NAIA). There, Story lost ever single match during his freshman year finishing 0-17 for the season. The following year Story transferred to Southern Oregon University and worked extremely hard on improving his wrestling abilities. His work ethic paid off in his senior year when he earned NAIA All-American honours while also finishing as the runner up in the 2006 NAIA finals in the 184 pound division. That same work ethic that shaped Story's wrestling career has also heavily influenced his MMA game. As a mixed martial artist Story competes at 170 pounds, where he presents an excellent combination of size, strength and speed for the division. His background is prevalent throughout his game as Story is a tenacious MMA wrestler who works very hard at taking his opponent to the ground. He sets up his takedowns nicely using his striking, and explodes forward with his attempts showing an excellent shot. Story's capable of driving through opponents with power doubles, singles, and impressive slams. Story pushes an extremely high pace and possesses a very strong top game on the ground. He's constantly working from the top where he shows strong guard passing skills and aggressive ground and pound capabilities. Story loads up very quickly and land big elbows and punches from inside his opponents guard. His submission game continues to develop nicely, as he's shown improving awareness on defense as well as flashes of a promising power submission game offensively. Story does push a high pace, and at times has tired and been taken down. Story is extremely difficult to control on the mat, powering out from under his opponents and muscling his way back to his feet. He will however need to continue working on his guard game, tightening up his takedown defense, and learning not to wear himself out too early in the match.
Although Story does come from a wrestling background, he's proven to be an aggressive southpaw striker. He goes after his opponent's on the feet where he possesses a nice left straight and a good right hook. Story will work his high kicks, and is a rugged striker with a sturdy chin (see bout with Nick Osipczak) who will slug it out. At times predictable, Story will need to work on expanding his arsenal. He still appears a little stiff with his striking and is certainly most comfortable fighting from top position on the mat. Story's encountered difficulty in the clinch before and although his natural tools are solid, he will need to continue working on his technical skills standing.
