ANALYSIS
Signed to the WEC roster, Ricardo Lamas is a lightweight fighter currently training out of Westmont, Illinois as part of Team Top Notch and also serving as a coach at Overtime MMA (located in Naperville, Illinois). A good athlete, Lamas' explosive speed is prevalent in all facets of the game when watching him fight, and he is a very composed, technically sound fighter who you will rarely see getting wild or out of control at any point in his matches. An intelligent fighter, Lamas' seems to have a very good understanding of the game and through his first two years in the sport has exhibited a very rapid learning curve in establishing a 7-1 professional record.
Lamas does come from a good wrestling background achieving NCAA Division III All-American status, being named a two-time CCIW (College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) Champion (2004, 2005), and being named the CCIW's Most Outstanding Wrestler (2004 season) during his stay at Elmhurst College. Lamas has very quick instincts and a good shot, and is a hardworking wrestler who works for his takedowns. Although he's not an "elite" wrestler, Lamas does show the intelligence and wherewithal to try and take the fight to the ground when it suits him, and also has an effective sprawl which nicely compliments his rapidly developing standup abilities. On the ground he shows excellent technical ground control - staying very tight to his opponent inside their guard, and does very well to control his opponents' legs and hips at all times (see bout with Bart Palaszewski). Lamas is very effective at standing in his opponent's guard where his speed and fast hands help him land good punches and an effective ground and pound attack from top position. Lamas' grappling game is not centered solely on his wrestling abilities, and much like his complete MMA game he shows well-rounded skills on the ground. He is currently a BJJ purple belt under 2nd degree Carlson Gracie black belt Jeff Neal, and displays nicely developing BJJ skills. Although Lamas has been caught in submission attempts in the past, his composure is excellent and he's shown the aptitude to calmly work himself out of those positions. Overall his MMA ground game is developing nicely and he definitely has the ability to develop into a solid all-around grappler.
Lamas shows well-rounded skills with a versatile striking repertoire and excellent overall potential in his standup game. He displays great footwork and is very light and quick on his feet, and possesses excellent leg kicks and good high kicks. Lamas also displays rapidly improving boxing skills and has very fast hands, a quick stinging jab, and a diverse striking game that he mixes up well in putting together solid combinations that include both kicks and punches. Lamas is not a "brawler" and is very composed and technically sound on his feet, and shows good defensive skills always keeping his hands up and does well to avoid getting caught up in standing in the pocket and trading. Given his tremendous speed and footwork, Lamas is an effective counter striker and is very good at using his quickness and lateral movement to get in and out of his opponents range very quickly. Lamas hasn't shown tremendous power in his striking, but the speed and quickness in his standup has been very effective and he shows the makings of a well rounded mixed martial artist.

OUTLOOK
Ricardo Lamas displays well rounded potential with steadily improving striking skills, technical ground abilities and BJJ to compliment his already competent wrestling base. Lamas is not an overpowering fighter and is probably a little undersized for the division which makes it even more important that he continue working on rounding out his game as much as possible as his wrestling will not be dominant in the division. He's progressed rapidly, has excellent cardio and takes an intelligent approach to his fights and with continued improvement has top ten potential at lightweight.
