ANALYSIS
Reuben Duran is a UFC veteran known for his exciting speed-strength attributes. A natural athlete, Duran’s combination of size and finishing ability should serve him well over the course of his fighting career.
Duran’s boxing background is quickly evident standing. The speed in his footwork allows him to manoeuvre effortlessly around the cage, while showcasing a varied attack with his punching. Armed with excellent hand speed, Duran throws a good jab and lead left hook. He comes from the right side a lot harder, showing punching power rarely seen at 135 pounds. Though Duran’s striking style is not passive, he’s able to counter punch effectively with his left hook and straight right. His natural reflexes are evident in his catch and counter off kicks, and Duran’s capable of putting together crisp combinations incorporating his speed and technique. Although his offensive game is quite mature, Duran does have some work to do defensively. He has a tendency to wade in with his hand low, in the process leaving himself vulnerable to counter strikes. While Duran has demonstrated the ability to work through these situations, largely in part to his chin and toughness, elite strikers will capitalize on any opportunities that come their way.
Stylistically, Duran is a power top position grappler. He’s quite adept at countering opposition strikes with takedown attempts, exploding through with a quick entry shot and power double. When on his game, Duran will work his ground and pound and a variety of chokes from the top. He’s very aggressive with both, throwing quick ground strikes and actively looking for subs (in particular a guillotine). For Duran to truly round out his ground game he will need to improve his guard. Although he’s shown a good sprawl, Duran is susceptible to strong top position grapplers. He will attempt to force his way to his feet, but strong grapplers will continue exploiting the holes in his game without improvement.
