ANALYSIS
Ramsey Nijem was the finalist on the thirteenth edition of the “Ultimate Fighter” reality series. The tough, aggressive and confident lightweight has shown excellent finishing instincts early in his fighting career. Nijem is recognized as a very active grappler/striker who’s known for his high pressure, aggressive offensive attack.

Nijem started his wrestling career at Henry M. Jackson High School (Mill Creek, Washington) where he was a team captain on two occasions. Eventually Nijem worked his way to Utah Valley University where he ended his wrestling career after four years of competition at the NCAA Division I level. That background has played a large role in shaping Nijem’s MMA game as he applies relentless pressure with his takedown attempts - especially from in close. Nijem will use his striking to close the distance or back opponents into the cage, where he’ll drop down for doubles with tenacity. Nijem is a very active, physical top position grappler who leaves no room for opponents to work. He utilizes his striking well from the top and actively looks to secure back mount where he can sink in a rear naked choke. As is the case with most wrestlers, Nijem’s guard is not a strong point in his arsenal and will require work.

Although Nijem’s striking is still developing, there’s a strong belief amongst his trainers that he’s a high- character individual who’ll put in the work to improve his shortcomings. Early in his fighting career Nijem’s fought with composure, showing little hesitation in pressing the action and pursuing opponents. He’s very aggressive, will let a barrage of strikes go, and stands in the pocket to trade. Nijem has shown respectable punching power in the early going, and the intelligence to go to the body when needed. He’ll pump out his jab and cross consistently, although he will occasionally get wild in his delivery. From close quarters Nijem will utilize his thai plum and aggressively pursue a dirty boxing attack. He unleashes plenty of knees to the legs and body, usually in an attempt to set up a takedown. Technically, Nijem does lack the fluidity and movement of strong strikers. He throws lots of power punches and often ends up off balance at the end of his combinations. He’ll also need to work on his range, shore up his footwork, and continue paying attention to his technique and defensive responsibilities.
OUTLOOK
Ramsey Nijem’s toughness and compete level are certainly commendable. He’s very difficult to throw off his game and confident in his grappling and striking. Though he may experience growing pains as he adjusts to the higher levels of competition, Nijem could eventually settle in as a top fifteen fighter.
