Only twenty four years of age, Peter Sobotta is already a five year veteran of the sport and finds himself competing in the deepest MMA organization in the world - the UFC. Coming from judo, tae kwon do and BJJ disciplines, Sobotta has a well rounded martial arts background and did have a fairly decorated grappling history in his home country of Germany. Fighting in possibly the deepest division in the UFC, Sobotta will take an immense step up in the level of competition he's fought, and will get a chance to test his skills against top level fighters for the first time in his career.

While he is a relatively well rounded fighter with developing striking skills, Sobotta's grappling abilities and ground game are definitely his bread and butter and he does make a concerted effort in trying to take the fight to the ground when given the opportunity. With a background in judo, Sobotta has shown good trips and throws from the clinch as well as developing wrestling abilities early in his career, but as his bout with Paul Taylor showed his overall takedown/wrestling skills still lack seasoning and will definitely need to be improved. In that bout Sobotta did succeed in taking Taylor down a few times, but for the majority of the match his takedown attempts were thwarted by a fighter whose takedown defense was considered an area of concern entering the fight. On the ground Sobotta will need to work on improving his control from top position, but he does display good potential with his ground and pound game although it is still slightly unrefined. Sobotta is also very composed fighting off his back where he has flexible legs, a good guard game and good sweeps and submissions. Overall, Sobotta does possess a decorated grappling background in Germany, and shows solid ground awareness as a mixed martial artist.

On his feet, Sobotta displays a diverse kicking game that includes a conventional array of kickboxing and muay thai kicks, but his tae kwon do background is also apparent as he will occasionally mix in more unorthodox techniques like standing axe kicks or jumping switch kicks into his striking arsenal. Standing southpaw, Sobotta is particularly effective with his left leg which he effectively uses to work his opponents head, legs and body. Sobotta also displays good hand speed and possesses a quick and tidy left straight, and for the most part does not get wild or sloppy with his punching. Although he does have spurts where he will go gung ho and fire everything at his opponents, Sobotta usually takes a patient approach with his striking and looks to counter on his feet. Defensively, Sobotta does well in keeping his hands up and not leaving himself open to counters but will need to get better at defending against leg kicks and could stand to improve his footwork and head movement. Overall, Sobotta's standup skills will need seasoning - he has shown difficulties when put under constant pressure and was getting picked apart by Paul Taylor for the majority of his UFC debut, and to that end he will need to continue working on his technical skills on the feet.
