ANALYSIS
Patricio Freire is a multi-talented MMA prospect currently competing in the featherweight division. A Brazilian native, Freire has trained with the very best in his home country having spent substantial time with Chute Boxe, Brazilian Top Team and Team Noguiera in the past. He's a BJJ black belt who's blessed with knockout power and a competent, composed ground game, and is currently signed to Bellator FC.

Freire trained extensively with the famed Chute Boxe camp earlier in his career and does bring a muay thai approach to his standup. He's very quick on his feet where he shows the ability to play the role of a patient counter striker, while at the same time possessing the capacity to explode on opponents with flying knees and powerful high kicks. Freire is equipped with one strike knockout power and already owns several highlight reel finishes on his MMA resume (see bouts with Glaristone and Borba). He has good hands including a nice lead left hook, and a nice assortment of quick kicks - including good front kicks, leg kicks and powerfully accurate high kicks (particularly a lead left high kick). Freire will need to continue fine tuning his defensive skills, but the power, tenacity and speed he operates with on his feet is extremely encouraging.

While Freire isn't a takedown machine, he has continued to work on his wrestling and does work hard from in close to get the fight to the mat. Going forward he'll need to continue working on his takedown defense (especially fighting in North America), as strong wrestlers have proven they can put him on his back. On the mat Freire is a legitimate black belt BJJ practitioner who possesses good technical ground skills. He's comfortable fighting off his back, displays an active guard and although he isn't known for his ground and pound abilities, Freire isn't hesitant at all about using his fists from top position. Well versed in submissions, Freire latches on chokes (guillotine, rear naked, etc.) with technical precision and a vice like grip, and is also particularly dangerous with leg locks. Overall his grappling game will need some fine tuning to get accustomed to the North American MMA game, but the development he's shown early on is extremely encouraging.
OUTLOOK
Patricio Freire shows a lot of promise in his striking, BJJ and submission skills and has already trained with many of the top camps in Brazil. His wrestling will need work (and realistically will play a major role in the success he's able to achieve fighting in the States) but he does possess definite top ten potential in the featherweight division.
