ANALYSIS
Entering the sport with bases in wrestling, boxing and muay thai, Nick Gaston is a talented heavyweight currently competing for King of the Cage. Standing 6'4" tall and weighing in at a solid 255 pounds, "Afrozilla" is blessed with the size necessary to match up with today's new age heavyweight. Gaston is an athletically gifted fighter with good strength and speed potential, and he does hold a notable win over UFC (and TUF) veteran Darrill Schoonover.
Gaston has proven very composed and comfortable standing, and does possess both a muay thai and boxing background. He possesses good skills inside and outside, and shows good speed, power and versatility in his striking game. A collegiate boxer at Ohio State, Gaston's armed with a good technical standup game. An aggressive fighter, Gaston cuts off the cage well, asserts himself immediately and looks to set the pace and control the action on the feet. He shows good quickness, nice footwork, and is able to move very well for a man his size. Gaston's equipped with a good kicking game, having shown good front kicks and powerful leg kicks. He also throws quick lead high kicks, powerful right high kicks, and has shown a good right cross from the outside. From in close, Gaston grabs a strong thai plum where he looks to deliver big knees, work his dirty boxing game and throw nice short elbow strikes. Gaston is a strong striker who's armed with respectable power, and his overall striking game does exhibit a nice balance between his raw power and technical acumen. Defensively, Gaston is an intelligent fighter who avoids the mid-range game and looks to stay either outside and use his reach, or get in close where he can use his clinch game. He uses his speed, footwork and range to keep good distance and avoid taking damage.
Gaston does have a high school wrestling background and will try and take his opponent down and work from top position. He works well from the half guard where he's effective at pinning his opponent's arm down (in an almost crucifix) and utilizing his ground and pound. Like his standup, he shows good composure on the mat where he's able to posture up and land big elbows (he stopped Darrill Schoonover by opening up a nasty gash). He also throws big knees from side mount, shows good control from the top, and will work for his submissions. Although he has shown a nice sprawl, Gaston will need to continue working on his BJJ and guard skills as those are the most concerning areas of his ground game.

OUTLOOK
Nick Gaston is a promising heavyweight prospect given the versatility he's shown in his game. His striking arsenal is strong and deep, and he has shown good wrestling and solid instincts on the mat. Gaston will need to continue progressing in all areas of his game, but with more time, training and experience he does have a chance to develop into a top ten heavyweight.
