ANALYSIS
Nick Denis is a rising bantamweight prospect with backgrounds in kyokushin karate, tae kwon do, and BJJ. Known for his punching power, Denis prefers the standup and is a former King of the Cage Canadian Bantamweight Champion. He also moved up in weight to compete in World Victory Road's inaugural Featherweight Grand Prix where he earned an impressive TKO victory over Seiya Kawahara in his opening round fight (he would lose to Marlon Sandro in the second round). A highly intelligent, cerebral fighter, Denis is a passionate golfer who also holds a PhD in biochemistry to compliment his black belts in tae kwon do and karate, and his purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (Ronin MMA/Fabio Holanda).
Denis' primary background is his standup. He's a confident, patient counter striker who waits for opening but is also fully capable of pushing forward aggressively when he smells blood. Coming from a tae kwon do and karate standup base, Denis' overall striking makeup is a little unorthodox. He uses little to no head movement, doesn't possess great conventional footwork, and overall remains very stationary on his feet. Due to those tendencies, Denis is somewhat of an easy target on his feet, can be hit and has been hurt more than once in his early career. Despite those peculiarities, Denis has proven a dangerous striker. He's equipped with nice, brisk left hook and right cross. Effective from in close, Denis works strong knees and punches to the head and body of opponents and is especially dangerous with a powerful right uppercut. Denis also possesses a good assortment of kicks, including quick stinging body kicks and nice high kicks. He's also shown excellent punching power (especially for the weightclass), and the vast majority of his wins have comes as a result of a (T)KO.
Denis isn't a top wrestler but he's not shy about attempting to take the fight to the ground from in close. He also shows adequate takedown defense and comes equipped with a solid jiu jitsu background (Ronin MMA and Fabio Holanda) that's still improving. Active off his back, Denis does possess flexible legs and quick hips, and likes working a high guard. He's not afraid to open his guard up and throws up lots of submission attempts (triangles, armbars, omoplata's) off his back. From top position Denis likes posturing up and working his punches, knees and elbows from inside his opponents guard, and If he's given space to manoeuvre, he can really bring it with his ground and pound abilities.
