ANALYSIS
An excellent athlete, Nah-Shon Burrell’s makeup includes promising speed, quickness and power. The Strikeforce Challengers vet has shown remarkable composure for an athlete his age, which when combined with his natural tools could allow Burrell to flourish into an impact welterweight.
Burrell possesses an exciting natural skill set with speed, agility, and quickness recurring frequently in discussions of his makeup. His ability to manoeuvre about the cage appears effortless, and his quick instincts are seen in both his countering ability as well as his movement in and out of range. Defensively Burrell is quite adept at using his speed to sway or lean away from opposition strikes, usually leaving him with a distinct speed advantage on both sides of the striking equation. Though he may be developing technically, Burrell’s shown a quick jab and a power right cross. He’s routinely able to get his high kicks off with little difficulty and shows promising counter punching ability in his left hand. Burrell puts his combinations together well and can explode out of nowhere the high level athletic techniques like flying knees. On occasion, Burrell seems to get comfortable working from mid-range even though he’s been blessed with the quickness to work from either inside or outside. Technically he’s also capable of developing into a cleaner striker; though that’s more indicative of his unfulfilled talent level then his current pedigree.
Burrell’s upside is not confined to his striking. A promising MMA wrestler, Burrell actively utilizes his takedowns in order to change pace and keep opposing fighters honest. Above average speed and power are apparent in those attempts, and his takedown style could correctly be termed “explosive”. Though his technical pedigree may still be developing, Burrell has shown he can drive through opponents using his raw strength and physicality. He also offers variety in his attempts; working a good single leg as well as a nifty assortment of trips from in close. In keeping off his back, Burrell’s shown good hip speed and balance. The area of his grappling arsenal that Burrell does need to concentrate on is his technical ground skills, as it is still heavily reliant on power and brute strength. He attempts to muscle through opposition guards while working his ground and pound from the top. Though he’s demonstrated the ability to power out of submission attempts, Burrell does leave himself susceptible to those attempts routinely. Burrell’s positioning is not where it needs to be and he routinely makes technical errors on the mat, highlighting the need for him to continue developing his BJJ.

OUTLOOK
Nah-Shon Burrell’s speed and strength are both exciting qualities of his natural makeup. Additionally he’s shown promise in multiple facets of his game, though his technical skills will require improvement. Given his progression, age, and natural talent level, there’s no reason to believe Burrell can’t develop into a top ten welterweight at some point.
