ANALYSIS
Michael Corey is a promising lightweight prospect who holds a notable victory over UFC veteran Brian Cobb. Corey has competed in the IFL with the Chicago Red Bears, where he put on a memorable back and forth performance against Shad Lierley. A former featherweight, Corey’s known for his quickness, versatility, and does hold well-rounded potential as a fighter.

Corey was introduced to the sport through his encounter with various grappling disciplines. Originally a high school wrestler, Corey made the natural transition to submission wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu before trying his hand at mixed martial arts. A NAGA and Grappler’s Quest veteran, Corey’s wrestling base still plays a pivotal role in his makeup as he works hard for the takedown from in close. Corey looks to shoot off his punching and does possess a good double leg takedown and nice outside leg trips. Corey transitions very quickly from top position and shows promise in his submission abilities. While Corey has shown good takedown defense, he isn’t known for his power grappling abilities and can be out muscled and put on the mat. Off his back, Corey works lots of up kicks and trains his BJJ under long time veteran Steve Berger, although he will need to solidify his guard and overall jiu jitsu game.

Corey has a background in boxing and muay thai, and takes a strong technical approach to the standup game. He shows good variety, looks to establish range and works his jab and cross from the outside. Corey does a good job of incorporating kicks into arsenal (effective low and high kicks) and displays nice fluidity in his footwork and movement. He’s armed with a quick lead left hook, and shows good counter striking abilities including a sneaky counter right. Corey offers variety on his feet, proving capable of incorporating quick spinning back fists and superman punches into his striking repertoire. From an offensive standpoint, Corey is able to throw sharp knees to the head and body of opponents from the clinch although he will need to continue putting work into his defensive clinch game.
OUTLOOK
Michael Corey’s shown potential in both his standup and ground game. There are concerns about his size at 155 pounds, but Corey’s proven to be a competent fighter who’s continued to progress in all areas of the fight game. Michael Corey has top twenty upside.
