ANALYSIS
Kenny Robertson made his rounds on local Midwest promotions before earning a one-fight deal with Bellator FC. After beating TUF veteran John Kolosci (and just a little over two years into his career), Robertson was signed to the UFC.
Robertson is a wrestler who comes to MMA with a good background. An Illinois State runner-up in high school, Robertson eventually went on to compete collegiately at Eastern Illinois University where he was an NCAA Division I Nationally Ranked Wrestler. Robertson is a good technical wrestler who is very capable of taking the fight to the ground. He possesses a strong mat presence, proving adept at establishing and maintaining position from the top. Robertson controls his opponent nicely, and has demonstrated strong submission awareness early in his career (both offensively and defensively). Robertson’s overall ground game is still developing, and he is still learning the various aspects of jiu jitsu. At times he still does leave himself open to being swept and will need to continue working on his weight distribution. Robertson will look to grind his opponent down from the top, utilizing a steady stream of punches, hammer fists and elbows. He’s adept at disrupting his opponent’s rhythm and wearing them down as he waits for opportunities to arise.
Robertson’s naturally proven to be a hard hitting welterweight who isn’t shy about letting his hands go. In spite of his base, Robertson will come forward and work his jab, left hook and right cross. He mixes in his kicks, a good overhand right, and also shows potential in his dirty boxing skills. Given his wrestling background, Robertson is adept at pressing his opponent against the cage and grinding them down by utilizing knees, short punches and uppercuts from in close. Still developing technically, Robertson does drop his hands frequently, disregarding his defensive game. He can be hit and will need to continue focusing on his footwork, movement and technique.
