ANALYSIS
The younger brother of former Pride veteran Bertrand Amoussou, Karl Amoussou is one of the most exciting prospects in all of mixed martial arts and currently a member of Haute Tension. Although he is a long time judo practitioner, Amoussou is probably best known for his relentless aggression and explosive standup abilities, which coupled with his sound clinch skills and well versed submission game bode very well for his future in the sport. A long-time veteran of M-1 Global, Amoussou recently signed on with Japanese promotion DREAM where he will look to continue his climb into the elite ranks of the middleweight division.

On his feet, Amoussou is a ridiculously aggressive striker who storms out of the gate and literally goes right at his opponent as soon as the bell sounds to begin delivering a full throttle attack - looking to finish with every strike he throws. Amoussou uses lots of different angles, and his diverse striking game and aggressive nature makes him very unpredictable and difficult to defend against. He does possess fast hands, nice footwork and good punching power, but he's probably best known for his dynamite kicking ability. Amoussou does have a French kickboxing background (savate) and it shows, as he has an assortment of lightning quick, and extremely powerful kicks that he can throw with equal precision to his opponent's legs, body (see bout with Mike Dolce below) or head ( see bout with Dmitry Samoilov below). Downright explosive at times, Amoussou possesses significant knockout power and has the ability to end the fight suddenly and in spectacular fashion as shown in his wins over Kazuhiro Hamanaka (flying knee) and Dmitry Samoilov (head kick). While his standup skills show incredible potential and his style is thoroughly entertaining, Amoussou will need to learn to fight with more composure and learn to pick his spots a little better. Amoussou is unbelievably talented, but he has a tendency to drop his hands, get wild and stand in the pocket trading punches leaving himself open considerably to strong counter punchers. Amossou's natural skills are good enough that he doesn't need to resort to "brawling" and he would be better served by continuing to refine his technical skills and learning to fight with a more controlled aggression.

Despite his excellent standup potential, Amoussou's primary background is actually in judo. Amoussou has a very solid background having studied judo since the age of six, and shows good instincts and strong work from in the clinch. On the ground, Amoussou shows well rounded potential and is comfortable fighting from both top and bottom position. Amoussou shows excellent ground and pound potential and can unleash a relentless ground attack making effective use of punches and hammerfists. In addition, he shows good sweeps off his back (see bout with John Doyle) and is very well versed in submissions with the majority of his wins coming via that route. Amoussou will however need to work on continuing to tighten up his overall ground game, as strong grapplers have given him some troubles in the past. Lucio Linhares was able to take Amoussou down, pass his guard, mount him and eventually finished the young Frenchman with strikes. In addition, Amoussou isn't a top wrestler and given his aggressive nature does leave himself open to being taken down. Amoussou does show good potential on the ground but will definitely need to continue refining his technique and shoring up his grappling game in order to become a complete MMA fighter.
OUTLOOK
Karl Amoussou has the kind of talent, tenacity and fighting style to be an elite level middleweight fighter but there are definitely parts of his game that need to be worked on and his overall game still lacks polish. Amoussou's fight mentality and demeanour is very similar to a young Wanderei Silva, and at only 24 years of age he has a chance to do big things in the sport. His talent is undeniable and his attitude is excellent, and with continued work he has a chance to develop into a top five middleweight.
