ANALYSIS
Justin Wren's introduction to the sport of mixed martial arts came almost by accident. Wren was a very committed amateur wrestler who was a two-time National Champion at Bishop Lynch High School where he trained under three-time All-American and former Olympic Gold Medalist Kenny Monday. After finishing high school Wren spent time at the Olympic Training Center, and was on his way to a promising collegiate career after earning a spot on Iowa State University's Division I team. A series of injuries forced Wren to the sidelines during which time he turned his attention to MMA and he hasn't looked back since. He began training mixed martial arts fulltime; earned a spot on the Ultimate Fighter 10, and the rest as they say is history.
As a wrestler entering the sport, Wren's first preference is to take the fight to the ground and fight from top position although he has shown the willingness to keep the fight standing against strong grapplers. He has a Greco-Roman background and is most effective with his takedowns from in close or in the clinch. From top position Wren has shown good control, nice guard passing abilities and an ever improving submission game. During his TUF stint he did catch Wes Sims very quickly with an arm triangle choke (eventually rendering the UFC vet unconscious), and he is working on complimenting his wrestling with effective submissions skills. He's still very green and has a lot of work to do, but Wren has shown promise in his grappling game.
Wren is still very green on his feet but has shown potential in his hands and the willingness to stand and strike. He really likes to work his jab and overhand right, possesses a nice left hook and has shown the ability to both sit back and counterpunch, but also press forward when he sees openings on his feet. Wren will need to continue working on his conditioning and technical skills, as he does have a tendency to fade and get sloppy as the fight wears on. At times he does get repetitive with his punching and will need to work on expanding his striking repertoire and working on his defensive skills. He's still impatient on his feet and will resort to chasing his opponents around the cage if they refuse to stand in the pocket and trade with him - often times trying to land the big knockout punch, but instead swinging and missing frequently and leaving himself open to patient counter punchers. While his willingness, attitude and approach to his standup game's good, Wren will need to work on tightening up his technical skills and expanding his striking arsenal.

OUTLOOK
Justin Wren is a competent Greco-Roman wrestler who's shown the willingness to keep the fight standing and not rely solely on his takedowns and ground control. How Wren's wrestling will match up with the better fighters in the division is still a very big question mark, and he will need to work hard on the other aspects of his game and rounding out his skill set. Wren is a hard worker who recently began training with the Grudge Fight Team (a Greg Jackson affiliate team) which could do wonders for his career going forward, and with continued work he has top twenty potential at heavyweight.
