ANALYSIS
Josh Hill is an ultra-talented bantamweight prospect who’s earned his stripes on the Canadian MMA circuit. Recognized as a mega athlete, Hill holds immense upside in his speed-power abilities while also showing good technique, excellent conditioning, and a strong MMA IQ. A massive, physical bantamweight fighter, Hill’s equipped with the raw tools to excel as a mixed martial artist.
Although Hill does not possess an amateur grappling background he’s shown fantastic upside in his MMA wrestling. He efficiently sets his shots up by working off his striking or shooting off his opponents punches, but is equally capable of using his raw power to physically bully opponents to the mat when needed. Slams and power double legs are Hill’s primary takedown of choice, and he’s also demonstrated beautiful transitions between different attempts. Known as a power grappler, Hill shows strong head- in-chest top control and looks to procure very tight, power guard passing techniques. Hill leaves very little room between himself and his opponent, looks to pass, and will take the opposition’s back if given the opportunity. He’s very strong from mount/back mount and has shown a power rear naked choke on several occasions. Hill is known for being able to land big punches, hammer fists and elbows from the top and will intelligently use his top position striking to pass his opponent’s guard. Although he’s capable of physically dominating opposing fighters, it’s encouraging to see the consistent progression Hill’s made on the technical side of things as he does not rely solely on his physical attributes. He’s also shown fantastic cardio and conditioning to begin his career, proving capable of pushing a high pace bout for multiple rounds without slowing down. As a powerful top position grappler, he will need to continue working on BJJ and guard.
Naturally, Hill is an agile striker who possesses good hand speed and power in his punching. He’s relaxed on his feet where he shows good footwork and movement overall. Much like on the mat, Hill has steadily improved as a striker showing awareness defensively and promise in his boxing. He offers variety in his punching and angles, throws a quick probing jab, and delivers measuring leg kicks from the outside. Although Hill takes a technical approach to his standup, he does prefer to push an up-tempo bout. He utilizes an aggressive, smothering attack looking to back opponents into the cage where he can work both his dirty boxing game and knees to the midsection. Given his ability to take opponents down, Hill’s aggressiveness does tend to give him opportunities with his striking as opponents must respect his takedown ability.
