ANALYSIS
Currently competing in the UFC, Johny Hendricks is a top welterweight prospect still very early into his MMA career. After an incredibly successful collegiate wrestling career, Hendricks moved to Las Vegas and joined fellow Oklahoma State University wrestler's Shane Roller and Josh Rosholt as part of Team Takedown. Hendricks appears to be very committed to his MMA career and has surrounded himself with an excellent set of trainers, and has worked extensively at Xtreme Couture in the past in addition to training his jiu jitsu under renowned BJJ coach Marc Laimon at his Cobrai Kai School in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A four time NCAA Division I All-American, three-time Big 12 Conference Champion, and a two time NCAA Division I Wrestling Champion, Hendricks' amateur wrestling credentials are incredible to say the least. Hendricks is very quick on his feet and possesses an intelligent, tactical wrestling game and has proven very capable of getting his opponents to the ground. While Hendricks' amateur wrestling pedigree is excellent, it should be noted that he doesn't possess the same kind of explosive power "shot" that fighters like Josh Koscheck, Gray Maynard or Georges St. Pierre demonstrate regularly. Hendricks has been taken down in the past (see bout with Justin Haskins) and his overall ground game will definitely require more than just his pure wrestling abilities and top game. On the ground, Hendricks displays good potential in his ground and pound and has shown the ability to unload with punches from top position when given the chance (bout with Alex Serdyukov). Hendricks has also been working very diligently on his BJJ and submissions skills in order to round out his grappling skills. He has shown good instincts on the ground and has proven capable of being able to take advantage of submission opportunities when they've presented themselves (see his bout with Richard Gamble below). Hendricks' biggest grappling strength will always be his wrestling ability but if he is able to surround that with good BJJ and submission skills, Hendricks has the potential to develop into a complete MMA grappler with an excellent overall ground game.

While his wrestling abilities garner most of the attention, Hendricks has been working hard on improving his striking and rounding out his complete MMA game. His WEC bouts with Alex Serdukov and Justin Haskins definitely showed lack of maturity in Hendricks' overall striking game, he did show good punching power, handspeed and good raw talent on his feet. Making his UFC debut against Amir Sadollah, Hendricks' showed vastly improved footwork, moved incredibly well and looked much more comfortable in his overall standup abilities. He was very aggressive and showed no fear in engaging on the feet, and was able to come away with a TKO victory just 30 seconds into the bout. Hendricks has shown rapid improvements in his striking and given his athleticism, work ethic and how early he still is into his career is fully capable of developing into a competitive standup fighter.
OUTLOOK
Johny Hendricks is still very unproven in MMA competition, but his wrestling pedigree is undeniable. He has been working diligently on layering those skills with good ground and pound, and a sound jiu jitsu game and appears to be developing into a well rounded grappler. His striking also appears to be coming around and he should continue to get more comfortable on his feet as his technical skills improve. His next few bouts should give a better indication of how his overall game is coming along, but he has displayed an excellent learning curve thus far and possesses considerable potential to develop into a top ten welterweight fighter in the future.
