ANALYSIS
John Salter is a UFC veteran training at Headhunter Combatives in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Salter enters the sport with a wrestling base and good credentials, having been a 2007 NAIA National Wrestling Champion at 174 pounds during his time at Lindenwood University. Salter is a tough, hardworking fighter who's made it known that he wants to be as well rounded a fighter as possible.

Salter isn't an explosively athletic wrestler, but he does possess a solid background having been NAIA National Wrestling Champion. A hardworker, Salter works diligently at trying to secure his takedowns and does possess a nice single leg from in close. He shows active ground and pound abilities on the mat and has worked hard at trying to improve his jiu jitsu game. Salter isn't the kind of wrestler that can avoid being put on his back well enough that it almost negates his guard game, but he does recognize this and has made an honest attempt at rounding out his grappling game as much as possible. He's made it known that he wants to be dangerous from all positions on the mat - including off his back, and that attitude will only benefit him as he reaches the higher levels of the sport. Salter is active off his back in trying to attempts sweeps and submissions, and he will need to continue making strides in his BJJ and guard games. He'll need to learn to defend himself better off his back (from strikes) and although his attitude is encouraging, his overall technical skills will need to be improved.

Salter will work his jab and let his hands go when he sees openings, but technically he's still raw and his striking is very much a work in progress. Salter's standup is still stiff, he's a little slow on his feet and his overall footwork is still rough and very basic. He's not a naturally quick or powerful striker, and he does have a habit of leaving himself open defensively to counters. Salter throws lots of "arm" punches and will really need to focus on his rounding out his game as much as possible, especially since he wouldn't be considered an elite wrestler either.
OUTLOOK
John Salter is a solid wrestler who's taken a step in the right direction in attempting to round out his game as much as he can. He'll need to pay particular attention to his striking and BJJ while continuing to work on all aspects of his MMA arsenal. Salter is raw and has plenty of work to do, but he does have top twenty potential at middleweight.
