ANALYSIS
Jeremy Spoon is a Bellator veteran known for his extremely aggressive style. Early in his career Spoon’s posted a solid finishing percentage, and currently trains at Apex Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu along with his twin brother Jerod.
Spoon comes from a strong wrestling background. He began at the age of twelve and found considerable success in the sport as a high school athlete. A standout in Oklahoma, Spoon captured a State Championship and was offered several collegiate scholarships. Eventually he settled on Neosho County Community College where he was a NJCAA qualifier in 2005. Suffice it to say that his wrestling background has played an integral role in shaping his game. Spoon is an active takedown artist who works diligently for his takedown attempts. He shows intelligence in shooting off his strikes where he’ll look to utilize his double leg or outside leg trips. An offensively styled mat tactician, Spoon displays good instincts on the ground. He works an aggressive ground and pound game and his submissions skills have developed well. Though he’s a wrestler by trade, Spoon has promisingly shown he’s comfortable working off his back, even pulling guard at times to get the fight down. Occasionally he’ll find himself in trouble on the mat, highlighting the need for continued technical development, although Spoon has shown good composure during those situations.
Spoon’s toughness and aggressiveness are trademarks of his striking style. He is known for taking risks in order to try and land his strikes and has shown he’s very capable of taking a punch. Normally Spoon will works his lead left hand with jabs or hooks before coming over the top with a cross or overhand right. Often times Spoon does utilize brawling strategies, relying heavily on his ability to out-will opposing strikers. Additionally, Spoon punches do tend to come in a little wide leaving him vulnerable to crisp counters down the middle. In order for his standup game to transition successfully to the higher levels, he will need to continue concentrating on his footwork, defense and range recognition.
