ANALYSIS
Jan Blachowicz is a highly regarded European fighter, and likely the top Polish light heavyweight prospect in the sport. A long time veteran of KSW (the most prominent MMA promotion in Poland), Blachowicz captured a one night-eight man tournament championship (under 95 kg) in May 2008. With knee and shoulder injuries keeping him sidelined for all of 2009, Blachowicz returned in 2010 to defeat four straight opponents (two in a single night) to once again capture KSW’s 95kg tournament championship. Despite drawing attention from several major promotions, Blachowicz has continued fighting in Poland where he’s been contractually obligated to compete. Blachowicz has built himself a strong reputation in Europe where he holds notable wins over Antoni Chmielewski, Daniel Tabera and Christian M'Pumbu.
Like the majority of Polish fighters, Blachowicz is a strong, intelligent grappler. He possesses a good sprawl and a competent takedown game consisting of nice body lock takedowns, trips, and throws from in close. Once on the ground, Blachowicz can make use of his versatile jiu jitsu game and strong submission skills. Blachowicz uses his submissions to sweep or pass, and stays tight ("chest to chest") to his opponents from the top. Extremely fluid on the ground, Blachowicz shows excellent transitions and impressive guard passing skills. He's also capable of launching an effective ground and pound attack while using his punching to open up grappling opportunities on the mat. Blachowicz displays good control from the top, effortlessly transitioning between back control and mount with ease. Although Blachowicz will need to work on controlling his opponent better from his back, he is a hardworking guard player who attempts numerous sweep and submission attempts on the ground.
Although he's at his best on the mat, Blachowicz doesn't feel like it's an absolute necessity to get the fight to the ground. He will stand and strike, and has shown he'll be an aggressive fighter when the need arises. Blachowicz fights with poise and composure standing where he displays good lead left high kicks and quick leg kicks. Blachowicz also has a nice jab, lead left hook and a frequently used left uppercut. Good at gauging distance, Blachowicz is an intelligent striker who doesn't get involved in wild exchanges. He works the body and varies the location of his striking, in addition to showing promising counter striking potential. Although Blachowicz isn't known for his thai clinch he does work his punching well from close, particularly on the separation where he throws big hooks. Blachowicz's punches get loopy at times and his footwork will require attention, but his standup continues developing into a nice compliment to his ground game.
