ANALYSIS
Coming from a strong jiu jitsu background, Jacob McClintock has shown a lot of promise as he's smoothly transitioned to the sport of mixed martial arts. An extremely accomplished BJJ player at a young age, McClintock was a former US National Grappling Champion, Pan American Games Champion, and had a third place finish at the BJJ World Championships in the purple belt division - all by the age of 16, and was considered one of the top prospects in the world of grappling before turning his attention to mixed martial arts. Extremely fluid on the ground, McClintock displays a quick, technical jiu jitsu game and currently holds a brown belt under Gustavo Dantas. In his short career, McClintock has shown the ability to get the fight to the ground where he exhibits a tenacious ground and pound attack in addition to his dangerous submission game. McClintock is very active fighting off his back and is good at using his long legs and excellent flexibility to constantly look for sweeps and submissions, and often chooses to utilize the rubber guard. McClintock will need to work on defending strikes from the bottom as he has proven susceptible to a strong ground and pound attack (see bout with Sultan Tikhaev below), and will also need to continue working on his wrestling and takedown defense. Showing excellent instincts on his feet, McClintock has picked up the striking game very quickly and shows an excellent left high kick, a developing clinch game and a very effective straight left. Very aggressive on his feet, McClintock has quick hands but will need refine his overall technique as well as working on his defense as he does tend to drop his hands, and get a little long with his punches. McClintock has finished all six of his fights in the first round, with four of those wins coming via (T)KO - somewhat surprising given his grappling background. Included in those wins was a ground and pound stoppage over fellow up and coming welterweight Zach Taylor, which showed he stacks up well when compared to other prospects in the division that are at similar points in their careers. Training out of Arizona Combat Sports since the age of 13, McClintock has a strong set of training partners at his disposal including the UFC's Carlos Condit, Ryan Bader and C.B. Dollaway to help him work on advancing his overall game. At just 21 years of age McClintock displays well rounded potential with still plenty of time to gain more experience and continue refining his skills.
OUTLOOK
Jacob McClintock has a solid BJJ game and has displayed good instincts on his feet in addition to training out of an excellent camp, and at only 21 years of age youth is definitely on his side. In a division dominated by top level wrestlers, maybe the biggest factor in determining how far McClintock can get in the division will be what level he can get his wrestling/takedown defence to, and how effective he can be off his back. One of the fastest rising prospects in the division, McClintock has top ten potential at welterweight.
