ANALYSIS
Greg Soto is a welterweight prospect and veteran of the UFC. He possesses good size and natural athletic abilities, and shows promise in his BJJ-wrestling background. Currently training out of New York, Soto is a Kurt Pellegrino protege who is also in the process of becoming a New Jersey State Police Officer.
Soto's grappling game is a combination of his wrestling and jiu jitsu backgrounds. While wrestling for Ocean Township High School, Soto was a two-time state place winner in New Jersey. After graduating he stopped wrestling and began focusing on his jiu jitsu training and overall grappling game. While Soto isn't known for being an overpowering or dominant wrestler, he does press hard for his takedowns and works diligently for single and double leg takedowns from in close. He stays tight to his opponent on the mat, and although he isn't an overwhelming ground and pounder he does patiently work his punches from the top. Soto is often content with sitting in his opponent's guard and controlling the fight from the top, and will need work on expanding his top game. He'll also need to work on his takedown defense in order to match up better with the strong wrestlers that dominate the division. Off his back Soto shows active hips and legs, holding a BJJ brown belt as of late 2010. Defensively he's good at holding guard, keeping opponents from passing, and avoiding submissions. Soto will also look to work the rubber guard and although he shows good defensive jiu jitsu skills, offensively he has work to do. He's certainly more comfortable from the top and will need to work on defending from strikes off his back in addition to his overall guard play.
Soto's still a developing striker. He does work his low kicks and shows a quick hook and right cross. A tough fighter, Soto will throw hard punches in the pocket and has shown the ability to take a punch. Overall however, Soto appears a little tentative on his feet and his striking game is still green. Soto's still primarily a grappler who uses his striking to set up his takedown attempts. He'll need to work on his clinch game, as well as working to expand his technical standup game.

OUTLOOK
Greg Soto is a good grappler given his wrestling background and soon to be black belt level BJJ skills. He'll need to work on his offensive arsenal - especially his striking, and continue piecing together a complete MMA game. Soto has top fifteen potential.
