ANALYSIS
A King of the Cage Canada Lightweight Champion, Gavin Neil is a promising Canadian lightweight known for the "hard-swinging and submission friendly" style he fights with. Nicknamed "Forrest" for his laid back and easy going demeanour, Neil is a tough, hardworking and intelligent fighter. He does attempt to take advantage of his opponent's weaknesses, and he fights at a high pace showcasing good cardio while attempting to finish. Early in his career he's gained a following for his time spent in King of the Cage Canada and MFC, where he holds a notable win over UFC veteran Richie Hightower.
Neil studies jiu jitsu under very well respected BJJ coach Adam Zugec (a black belt himself under Marcus Soares). He possesses a very fluid ground game which includes impressive guard passing abilities and quick transitions - especially from mount/side mount to back control. Neil demonstrates competent submissions skills as well as a good ground and pound game. Staying tight to his opponent, Neil shows good ground control and remains active with his punching from the top. If however he isn't controlled properly, Neil's shown the ability to posture up and deliver a quicker, more aggressive attack of punches from the top. Fast and efficient, Neil does a good job of keeping it technical and smart as his ground game continues to develop nicely.
Neil isn't known as an explosive striker although he has shown composure, a sturdy chin and good hand speed on his feet. He intelligently works both his low and high kicks, shows a nice left hook and right cross, and possesses sound counter punching capabilities. From close quarters, Neil's shown good dirty boxing skills - grabbing the single collar and working the head and body well with punches and knees.
Neil does a good job of mixing in his kicks with his punches and shows defensive awareness in keeping his chin tucked, and hands up most of the time. Although he normally remains composed, there are times when Neil will go for broke, simply putting his head down and winging punches. He was getting outworked in his fight with Charlie Zac, and although Neil doesn't shy away from the standup, technically he still needs to shore up some areas of his striking game.

OUTLOOK
Gavin Neil has shown versatility early in his career. He trains out of a solid camp, has progressed nicely, and continued making his mark on the Canadian fight circuit. If he continues winning it will only be a matter of time before a larger promotion comes calling, as Neil's shown he does have top twenty potential as a fighter.
