ANALYSIS
Gary Wright currently trains out of Toshido Fighting arts where he is a teammate to UFC fighter Rory MacDonald. Prior to beginning his mixed martial arts, Wright wrestled for Simon Fraser University's varsity team and that background plays a large role in the makeup of his game. A King of the Cage Canada Welterweight Champion, Wright holds a solid win over UFC veteran T.J. Grant and is currently one of the top welterweights on the Canadian fight scene.
Wright's greatest weapon is his wrestling ability and ground and pound game. Although he isn't a dominant wrestler - he possesses good takedowns, excellent top control and difficult to handle on the ground. Wright stays very tight to his opponents and keeps busy with an effective array of short punches. He's also able to posture up and deliver powerful elbows and punches on downed opponents without getting wild or reckless. His ground and pound potential is very exciting, but it is a little concerning how much he relies on his ability to take opponents to the ground. Wright can and has been put on his back, although he's very difficult to keep there. He does find himself put in precarious positions at times and will need to continue working on his BJJ and submission skills. Wright is however very resilient, never quits and continues working his way out of tight spots. He was mounted, had his back taken and was caught in several tight submission attempts against T.J. Grant but kept his cool and wound up winning a decision.
Wright's a composed striker who displays nice technical skills across the board. He uses his jab and cross well, shows good counter punching abilities and mixed up his punches and kicks effectively. He also makes good use of leg kicks and high kicks and throws good knees from the clinch. At times Wright gets a little stationary and stands upright, and will need to work on his footwork and head movement. Wright likes throwing one or two punches at a time, and when he's put under pressure standing he'll instinctively look to shoot in. Visibly, Wright's much more comfortable fighting on the ground but he isn't an elite wrestler who can rely entirely on his takedowns and will need to work on his standup.
