Freddy Assuncao comes to MMA from a fighting family, as the younger brother of UFC veteran Junior Assuncao and fraternal twin of WEC standout Rapahel. A black belt in capoeria, Assuancao also has backgrounds in muay thai, and BJJ and has proven capable of handling himself well whether the fight stays standing or goes to the ground.

Assunaco began training in BJJ shortly before making his pro debut, and had achieved a purple belt (under his brothers) by early 2010. As a grappler Assuncao likes to control the action and dictate where the fight takes place with his takedowns. He utilizes a steady ground and pound game, transitions well between positions and does well to keep his composure. Assuncao shows promise as a grappler with continued improvement in his guard and submission games.

Assunaco began training muay thai in 2006, compiling a 4-0 and 3-1 record as an amateur and pro respectively. Assunaco has shown he can use his kicks will, turning his hips and digging into the legs and body with heavy blows. He’s able to throw quick high kicks and also uses his push kicks to keep his opponent on the outside. Controlled and defensively acute, Assunaco utilizes a quick jab and a good left hook while showing solid footwork and head movement.
