ANALYSIS
Felipe Fologin is a Cleber Jiu Jitsu middleweight known for his grappling pedigree. Holding legitimate black belts in both judo and BJJ, Fogolin has shown early on that his grappling style is well suited to MMA. He’s also displayed promise in his standup, and is potential impact player in the middleweight division.
Fogolin possesses a very strong BJJ and Judo combination grappling base. He currently holds black belts in both disciplines, with his belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu being earned under highly respected instructor Cleber Luciano. Fogolin has competed in many jiu jitsu tournaments over his career, compiling strong credentials before pursuing mixed martial arts. Among them, Fogolin is a 2008 Pan-Am Bronze Medalist, a 2008 BJJ World Championships (Mundials) Bronze Medalist, and a 2009 No-Gi Mundials Bronze Medalist – all in the brown belt division. As a strong judoka, Fogolin does possess a diverse takedown game. He’s armed with slick throws and trips from the clinch, including a beautiful drop seoi nagi he’s used on more than one occasion. Felipe also possesses a nice double leg takedown and outside leg trip, and overall is certainly capable of getting the fight to the ground. Once on the mat, Fogolin gets to work with his technically strong grappling game. He demonstrates excellent control and patience from the top, and certainly isn’t reluctant about using his fists on the mat. Showing heavy ground and pound capabilities, Fogolin rains in quick, straight punches that cut through his opponents’ defense. His accurate striking on the mat nicely compliments his submission versatility, and Fogolin is a multifaceted grappler without question.
Fogolin possesses well rounded potential as an MMA fighter having displayed natural striking abilities. He trains his striking under Rafael Cordeiro (formerly of the Chute Boxe camp) and holds considerable upside in his standup. Fogolin competes with composure, and demonstrates good footwork and agility while standing. He works his hands, throws quick, effective leg kicks and continues working hard at rounding out his skill set. Fogolin has gassed badly in the past at which point his technique goes out the window, so going forward he will need to make a serious effort at working on his cardiovascular training.
