ANALYSIS
Evan Dunham is a hard working lightweight prospect currently competing in the UFC. A product of Xtreme Couture, Dunham has made steady progress throughout his early career and already holds quality wins over Per Eklund, former Pride and UFC veteran Marcus Aurelio and former Ultimate Fighter winner Efrain Escudero. Although he comes to the sport without a specific base in any one discipline, Dunham does display proficiency across the board and well rounded potential overall.
Dunham continues to show improvements on his feet where he displays ever improving technical striking skills, good footwork and the willingness to let his hands go. Dunham will throw the occasional kick, but relies primarily on his hands and his boxing skills. Standing southpaw he possesses an effective right hook (see bout with Marcus Aurelio) and lead uppercut, but his best weapon by far is an excellent straight left that Dunham makes very effective use of. Dunham's uses that left straight very frequently, and it's delivered with great speed and precision and has served Dunham well in his early career. Dunham is an intelligent striker who uses his reach well, and has displayed strong counter punching abilities in addition to knockout power standing. Dunham outclassed both Marcus Aurelio and Efrain Escudero for the majority of their fights, and his overall striking game appears to be developing very nicely. He will need to continue improving his head movement and defensive skills, but Dunham shows promise on his feet and given his work ethic, camp, and age is more than capable of developing into a competitive MMA striker at the very least.
Despite the aptitude and progression he's shown in his striking game, Dunham initially became known for his grappling game and submission abilities. He currently holds a BJJ brown belt under Wellington Dias (a fourth degree Royler Gracie black belt) and has recorded the majority of his wins by submission. Dunham is technically sound on the ground and handles himself well fighting from the top and off his back. He has a very active guard game, is difficult to put in danger, works well from the butterfly guard and is very difficult to hold down or control on the ground. Dunham is constantly looking to make things happen off his back, whether it be sweeps, submissions or getting the fight back to his feet. Dunham also displays good transitions and a slick submission game. He links together submission attempts very well, locks them in tightly and finishes. Dunham finished Escudero with a beautiful sequence on the ground, transitioning from his back to a triangle attempt before locking in a very tight armbar to force the tapout. Dunham has also steadily improved his wrestling abilities and takedowns over the course of his early career. He stuffed numerous takedowns by Marcus Aurelio and avoided all of the takedown attempts of Efrain Escudero. Dunham took Escudero down very nicely with a couple of bodylock takedowns and has continues to show improvements in his overall wrestling game. Dunham's MMA game continues to come together nicely, and he really has no holes in his game. It remains to be seen if his skills are good enough to match up with the elite fighters in the sport in their respective areas of the game, but there's no doubt he shows well rounded potential.

OUTLOOK
Evan Dunham is often overlooked when discussing the top lightweight prospects in the world. Much of that reason is attributable to the fact that unlike many athletes who've crossed over to MMA, Dunham's pure abilities in the various disciplines of the sport are untested. He doesn't come from a decorated grappling, wrestling or striking background, and because of that onlookers have been relatively reserved in assessing his overall skill and potential in the division. While that is an obvious concern going forward, it's also undeniable that Dunham has thoroughly impressed in his three year professional career and has shown well rounded skills along the way. Dunham is an intelligent, hard working fighter who comes from an excellent camp and does have top ten potential at lightweight.
