Edwin Figueroa began his career patiently (only fighting seven times in four years as a pro) before signing with the UFC in mid 2011. As a mixed martial artist he’s earned a reputation as a game opponent, who competes with a lot of heart, tenacity and will to finish.

Figueroa is a striker who embraces the standup aspect of MMA. Very rugged and hardnosed in his approach, Figueroa is notorious for standing toe to toe with opposing fighters. Everything he throws is “heavy”, and Figueroa often puts his head down and lets fly with big haymakers. Edwin does to an admirable job of working the body, as well as mixing in leg kicks and high kicks. Although he does show a lot of resolve and tenacity in his approach, Figueroa’s technique often goes as the bout wears on. Cleaner strikers can, and have picked him apart with ease, and Figueroa should work towards tidying up his technique and defense.

An aggressive all around grappler, Figueroa competes very actively on the mat. He is consistently attacking with submissions, and pursues an aggressive ground and pound strategy. Figueroa is very scrappy in his makeup, and refuses to give in at any point in the bout. He works his way out of tights spots and keeps his composure during even deeply sunk submissions. Technically, Figueroa does leave himself open to getting caught on the floor. He’s also susceptible to takedowns and will need to shore up his defensive wrestling game.
