ANALYSIS
Born and raised in the Pillippines, Eduard Foyalang is a Wushu fighter and one of the top Filipino prospects in MMA today. As a Wushu practitioner, Folayang comes to the sport with strong credentials and good experience. His accomplishments include being a two-time Gold Medalist at the South East Asian Games, capturing a Silver Medal at the 2006 Asian Games and winning a Bronze Medal at the 2005 World Wushu Championships. Additionally, Folayang is also a URCC Welterweight Champion who, given his ethnic roots and martial arts background is a very interesting prospect in the lightweight division.

Good at gauging distance, Folayang attempts to stay just outside his opponents range. He fights with good composure and has a solid repertoire of kicks, including effective front and inside leg kicks. As is the case with the majority of the quality fighters in the lower weight divisions, Folayang does possess good speed and quickness. He’s blessed with good hand speed and shows off a nice jab, lead left hook and a quick right cross. While Folayang will look to counter at times, he does prefer controlling the action standing and occasionally will get impatient and start chasing his opponent. His punches will also get long on occasion, leaving Folayang susceptible to counters straight down the middle (he did have trouble dealing with the quick straight punches of Bao She Ri Gu Leng). Folayang displays good defensive awareness, keeping his guard up and effectively avoiding low kicks with his quickness. As a Wushu practitioner, Folayang does prefer to keep the fight on the outside and will need to continue working on his clinch striking.

If the bout is being contested on the mat, Folayang definitely prefers fighting from top position and will try and take his opponent down to achieve that. He has shown potential in that regard with powerful takedowns on occasion, including an impressive double leg slam. Folayang has also proven to be good at keeping off his back, although his guard and overall grappling game (including takedowns and takedown defense) is largely untested against quality opposition. Folayang’s ground game features a nice ground and pound attack. Favouring the half guard where he can pin his opponents arm to the mat, Folayang possesses good cardio and keeps active by utilizing a quick array of punches, forearms, and elbows.
OUTLOOK
Eduard Folayang is a decorated Filipino Wushu fighter who’s enjoyed success early on. Although he certainly has some polishing off to do, Folayang shows good natural talent and solid technical skills. He will need to prove his worth on the ground, but Folayang has top twenty upside.
