ANALYSIS
A big, strong welterweight with a good wrestling background and a reputation for knocking people out standing, Edgar Garcia is a very intriguing prospect to say theleast. Training out of the Arizona Athletic Club located in his hometown of Yuma, Garcia is still very early into his MMA career but displays the natural tools necessary to develop into a well rounded fighter as he gains more experience and continues his training.

A former high school wrestling standout, Edgar Garcia began his MMA career with a solid wrestling base that saw him win the 2002 Arizona State Wrestling Championship and recognition as the State's most outstanding wrestler that same season. In his early career he has demonstrated the ability to take the fight to the ground with good takedowns and powerful slams (see bout with Brad Blackburn), but for the most part uses his wrestling in reverse as he prefers to keep the fight standing. He has shown some glimpses of a developing submission game, most notably in his bout against DaMarques Johnson where he tried to finish with a peruvian necktie, but he was submitted shortly afterwards with a triangle choke and his overall grappling and submission games are still developing. Also, his wrestling abilities have not been tested against a top fighter and how those skills will stack up against the elite wrestlers of the division remains to be seen. Garcia would likely benefit by making better use of his wrestling abilities, as the mere threat of being taken down would make his game less predictable, cause opponents to focus on more than one point of attack and probably open up even more opportunities on his feet.

Despite his wrestling background, Garcia developed a very deep rooted passion for the sport of boxing at an early age and so it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that he shows a definite preference in keeping his fights standing. In his early career Garcia has shown that he has naturally heavy hands and the willingness to stand and exchange on his feet. A powerful puncher, Garcia is an aggressive striker who looks to cut off the cage and force his opponents to trade with him as he showed in his WEC debut, looking very impressive in knocking out former title contender Hiromitsu Miura just 1:18 into the opening round of their fight. Despite his aggressive nature, Garcia shows good composure with his standup and possesses the fast hands and mental capacity to play the role of an effective counter puncher (see bout with Brad Blackburn).

At times Garcia will get predictable with his punching and will need to work on diversifying his striking repertoire. He doesn't incorporate many kicks into his standup arsenal and tends to stick with throwing the same two punch combinations (jab, right cross) repeatedly while looking to counter with a quick left hook (this was very apparent in his bout with Brad Blackburn). While Garcia will need to continue refining his technique and working on his defense, five of his first seven wins have come via knockout and there's no doubting the fact that Garcia possesses significant punching power (see bouts with Kalani and Rodriguez below for a sample). When you also add in the fact that he displays good hand speed and solid developing, technical boxing skills, Garcia has the potential to develop into a solid MMA striker with dangerous knockout power.
OUTLOOK
As is the case with many young fighters, Edgar Garcia is not currently training at one of the premier camps in MMA and would likely benefit from a skills, conditioning and strategic point of view from doing so. What we do know is that Garcia possesses heavy hands and a competent wrestling game, but many facets of his game are still untested. He must continue to prove his skills, but given his tenacity, background, and natural tools, he shows the potential to develop into a top fifteen welterweight.
