Darrell Montague is a very promising mixed martial artist. Although he’s best suited at flyweight, Montague has fought the majority of his bouts at 135 pounds because of his difficulty in finding competitive matches at the lower weight class. A versatile fighter, Montague’s MMA game flows very nicely. He never forces anything and always appears relaxed and at ease regardless of where the fight goes. He possesses both wrestling and boxing backgrounds and if his early matches are an indication, he should continue developing into a well rounded fighter.

Montague does have a high school wrestling background and has shown the capacity to take his opponent to the mat with powerful slams and effective takedowns. He shows very nice transitions and throws strong punches and elbows from top position. Montague does possess good takedown defense, but fighting above his natural weight division he can be muscled to the mat often. Montague controls his opponents’ balance well off his back and shows good fluidity in his guard game. Montague alternates well between positions, is equipped with a very solid submission game and shows competency from any position on the ground.

Montague is an exciting striker who showcases tremendous speed and quickness in his standup. Light and nimble on his feet, Montague has very good footwork and is adept at getting in and out of range, and cutting off the cage. Montague has a patient, methodical approach to his striking as he picks his spots, times his opponent and waits for openings. Technically, Montague throws quick, tidy punches including a good right hook and an excellent straight left. He throws an impressive spinning back fist (his first pro win actually came as a result of a fantastic spinning back fist) and shows a lot of confidence in his striking game. Montague works the body effectively with good punches and thunderous body kicks. He delivers solid knees from close quarters, and is also capable of unleashing very precise flying knees from further out. Montague possesses fantastic punching power for his size, and his overall striking arsenal is an impressive combination of that power, agility and hand speed.
