ANALYSIS
Fighting out of Arizona, Danny Martinez is a promising bantamweight prospect. Size wise, although he's fought all the way up at 145 pounds, Martinez is quite undersized even for the bantamweight division. Growing up alongside UFC vet Jesse Forbes, Martinez would go on to wrestle at Pima Community College along with Forbes. That school is well known in the Arizona area having also produced MMA veterans Drew Fickett, Efrain Escudero, and Jamie Varner. A former Rage in the Cage Bantamweight Champion, Martinez is also a former competitor of both the WEC and TKO promotions.

Martinez comes from a wrestling background, having competed successfully at both the high school and collegiate level as an NJCAA wrestler. Wrestling at Pima Community College, Martinez finished 7th in the NJCAA tournament during his 2006 season. Although he's not known for being a dominant wrestler, Martinez is definitely solid in that department, and does possess a good deal of amateur experience. Martinez will set up his takedowns nicely - shooting in off his punches and showing a nice double leg takedown, as well as good slams and ankles picks from in close. He shows good control on the mat, staying tight to his opponent's and controlling them well. Relentless from the top, Martinez is very active with his punching and will look to rain in his punches and elbows. At times, that aggressiveness has led to Martinez fending off trouble and he will need to work on refining his BJJ game and learning to harness his aggressive nature. Fighting above his natural weight for much of his career, Martinez has been muscled around and taken down hard early in his career. Although he does work very diligently at getting the fight back to his feet, his guard game is green and he'd be well served by continuing to work on his technical mat skills and submission game.

Martinez's striking base is his boxing, as he shows fast hands a good straight left. He's armed with a very solid lead left hook, and steps into his punches to generate good speed and power in his striking. Martinez is an engaging striker who's armed with a very good chin and the punching power to finish on his feet. Although he's very willing to exchange, at times Martinez will get wild with his punching. In the past he's encountered difficulty when matched against strikers of strong technical proficiency. Martinez pushes a good pace, possesses nice cardio while showing resiliency and good heart in his makeup. Although his striking shows potential he will need to continue working on his technical skill on his feet.
OUTLOOK
Danny Martinez is a good wrestler and boxer. He will need to sharpen up his arsenal, focusing on his BJJ and guard training in particular. A natural flyweight, Martinez will need to overcome the size issues of fighting at bantamweight although he's shown he has top twenty potential in the division.
