ANALYSIS
The younger brother of UFC veteran Joe Lauzon, Dan Lauzon made his UFC debut in 2006 just four fights into his pro career as the tender age of eighteen, which at the time was the youngest debut of any fighter in the organization's history. In the three years since, Lauzon has compiled an 8-1 record, gained valuable experience and continued to mature as a fighter, as he once again finds himself back in the UFC after signing with the company in 2009.
On his feet, Lauzon likes to control the pace of the fight - at times opting to be the aggressor and push forward and other times preferring to remain patient, counter-punch, and pick his spots with his striking. Where he has shown trouble in the past has been when he's been put under consistent pressure. Lauzon likes to stick and move with his counters, but when constantly pressed has shown difficulties dealing with the diminished room to manoeuvre and has developed a dangerous habit of continually ducking and dropping low in an attempt to avoid his opponents' strikes (as opposed to dropping low to shoot for a takedown). This was very evident in his bout with Bobby Green, where Green's extremely aggressive standup troubled Lauzon for much of the fight. In spite of that, Lauzon is a versatile fighter who mixes up his punches and kicks well, effortlessly transitions between an orthodox and southpaw stance, and displays a good straight left and right cross. Lauzon will definitely need to continue working on his standup skills, but given his age is far from a finished product and shows good potential on his feet.
Lauzon has shown good wrestling early in his career and has proven capable of taking the fight to the ground where he is usually at his best. Once on the ground, Lauzon remains very composed - especially from top position, and is a competent grappler with good BJJ, submissions and a very good, active ground and pound game (see highlight video below). With an MMA game that flows well, Lauzon shifts comfortably from his ground and pound to submissions, and also displays excellent transitioning between submissions, as he displayed in the sequence that led to his triangle choke victory over Frank Latina. Lauzon will need to continue working on defending better off his back from strikes, although he has exhibited good sweeps and submissions from that position.
Making his UFC debut three years ago against Spencer Fisher, Lauzon displayed a wide array of the ground skills he possessed as he twice took the UFC veteran to the ground - once with a beautifully executed high single leg takedown, cut Fisher open with a solid ground and pound attack on the mat, showed good technical grappling abilities and top control (actually mounting Fisher momentarily), and overall displayed an extremely composed ground game for a fighter his age. Although he did eventually lose, it should be noted that at the time Lauzon was an 18 year old kid less than a year into his pro career who had dominated the first four minutes of his bout against an opponent with an 18-2 record, who was also a very well respected veteran in the sport. Since that time, Lauzon has only further refined his technical abilities and continued to mature both physically and mentally, and overall displays excellent potential as an MMA grappler.

OUTLOOK
Dan Lauzon may not be blessed with the same explosive athleticism that some in the sport are and his game still lacks polish, but at 21 years of age Lauzon still has plenty of developing to do and remains far from being a final product. The experience he's gained in his first three years (albeit, the majority of which did not come against legitimate world class fighters) could prove to be invaluable in his second stint in the UFC. Lauzon will need to continue working on refining his overall game, but given his age, talent and experience has top twenty potential at lightweight.
