ANALYSIS
Chris Camozzi is a middleweight prospect best remembered for his stint on "The Ultimate Fighter 11". Entering the competition with a win over Victor O'Donnell, Camozzi was forced to withdraw when it was discovered he had broken his jaw in the hard fought victory. Although he's rough around the edges, Camozzi did enter the sport with four years of high school wrestling experience and has proven to be a very exciting fighter early in his career. He's shown tremendous heart and tenacity, and if his technical skills can ever catch up to his mental fortitude he has a chance to enjoy a long, successful career in the middleweight divison.
Camozzi is a tough, gritty athlete who possesses the mentality necessary to develop into a competitive striker standing. A willing combatant, Camozzi is a very aggressive striker who goes right after his opponents. He's perpetually moving forward and never hesitates in letting his hands, knees and legs go. A southpaw striker, Camozzi's throws a good left straight and left hook. He mixes up his punches nicely and does a good job of working his kicks to the head and body of his opponents. From in close, Camozzi looks to latch on to the thai plum where he can tee off with big knees. Always pressing the action, Camozzi loves coming in with flying knees and has proven particularly adept at catching his opponents trying to shoot in on him. An engaging striker, Camozzi will oblige his opponent in standing and trading and has proven very durable in his early career. Given his striking style it's not too surprising to see Camozzi getting hit on his feet, although he is equipped with a very good chin, and has proven he can take a lot of damage and is extremely difficult to rattle. A perfect example of Camozzi's hardnosed and durable nature was in his fight with Victor O'Donnell, where he broke his jaw but never flinched, hesitated or stopped competing. While Camozzi's attitude and enthusiasm is definitely encouraging, he will need to work on shoring up his defense and improving his technique. He's he will play into blindly trading in the pocket and has shown a tendency to drop his guard when throwing punches. Going forward in his career, Camozzi will need to continue working on his footwork and defensive abilities.
Although Camozzi inclined to keep the fight standing, he does come from a wrestling base and will look to gain top position if the fight hits the mat. He possesses good throws and takedowns from in close, and uses his long arms and elbows to work an effective ground and pound game from the top. Partly due to the fact that he is so aggressive on his feet, Camozzi is susceptible to being taken down. Strong wrestlers have been able to control him on the mat, and Camozzi will need to continue working on his takedown defense and ground game. Opponents have also been able to work their ground and pound against him and easily been able to pass his guard, so Camozzi will need to work on improving his positional guard game. Although his BJJ should be a point of focus going forward, Camozzi has shown the ability to remain calm and cool under pressure. He's very active off his back, where he shows sound submissions awareness and uses his fists and elbows aggressively.
